Skipped quite a few historical events I see. No Jim Crowe, no KKK, glosses over slavery. Not surprised

A lot of Northern Democrats also supported slavery such as President Franklin Pierce from New Hampshire and President James Buchanan from Pennsylvania both of which served in the 1850s immediately prior to the election of Lincoln and the American Civil War breaking out. The Northern Democratic nominee in 1860 who ran against Republican Abraham Lincoln and Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge was U.S. Senator Stephen Douglass from Illinois who supported "popular sovereignty" or "state's rights" on the issue, meaning he thought each state should decide whether or not to have slavery. Plus, although we say that Breckinridge ran on a "Southern Democratic ticket" his VP nominee running mate was a U.S. Senator from Oregon, and Douglass's VP nominee on the "Northern Democratic ticket" was a former Governor and U.S. Senator from Georgia who later served in the Southern Confederacy, so although approximately accurate of the voting blocks involved it wasn't so cut and dry at the time, it was basically a split in the Democratic Party between those who thought slavery should be allowed everywhere due to the Constitution protecting property right per the U.S. Supreme Court Dread Scott case and those who argued each state should decide for themselves whether to tolerate slavery or ban it.

Just might be me but it seems like the old Party’s weren’t that different from each other but it seems like at some point the democrats went super liberal.
