One of the Kohr brothers, the youngest, is one of my customers. He is 93 yrs old, his dad and uncle started the company. The company they began was a small machine and fabricating shop in Philadelphia. You see, these guys pioneered refrigeration, while it was in it's infancy. At that time folks were still getting deliveries from the Ice Man for their boxes. The original Kohrs developed machinery for commercial applications with several patents under their belts. They developed the first commercially successful soft serve ice cream makers. The ice cream itself became a mere sideline as the Kohrs loved visiting the NJ and surrounding beach areas. Shops began appearing...first in the Kohrs chain then a brief attempt at franchising which met mediocre success. As the younger Kohrs moved into the picture large corporations like GE and Westinghouse were mass producing refrigeration for homes and businesses. The younger Kohrs expanded the ice cream businesses becoming famous for the only available soft serve orange flavor in America. They sold patents to companies that would later supply chains like dairy queen with equipment. There are still an abundance of Kohrs ice cream places in NJ, Del, PA, and a couple in NY. So they haven't been making ice cream for 100+ years, just the stuff that makes it.
