This is how not to trim a juniper. If you want this shape, get a boxwood. I can't tell you how many of these I see at malls and office buildings where the landscaping company does not understand the plant and just hacks it into a shape.

There is one thing about Juniper that you didn't mention and that is about the dead zone. If you cut past the green into the wood, you will be left with bare patches that will not fill in. I'm speaking from experience because I cut into our juniper hedge too far 9 or 10 years ago and it never filled back in. Luckily, it happened in a spot that's not too noticeable. I hope you consider revising this video so that people do not ruin their junipers thinking that they'll fill back in like you said.

I have a Gold Coast Juniper. They are absolutely beautiful in its natural form. The round hedging does not do it justice & I would never hack prune a Juniper. They should be pruned methodically by sections & not past the inner green. There are other shrubs to chose if you want that rounded look but Juniper is definitely not one of them.

Thanks man I’m in my second year of starting my own lawn care business and I got my first juniper bush trim!

That is absolutely NOT the way to prune any shrub that is not intended to be an architectural shape. Go get some horticultural training.

Good Vid. tnx, I have a Juniper in from of my house and it hasn't been trimmed in about 3 years. Its a monster and I just ordered a Milwaukee cordless hedge trimmer. Currently have a cheap corded trimmer but its too much of a PITA with all the extension cords. Good vid as I learned a few things I wasn't aware of.

Will add that you can make the branches sticking out the top a bit more rounded. Use loppers/secateurs to cut down really thick ugly branches - hide cuts behind other branches. If you have the time hand shear it with hedge shears to taper. Try to make everything level. Around really thick / overgrown branches you can only cut it back so far - make those parts rounded like clouds.

Can you use a looper cutter to get the big stuff that’s overgrown and then use a hedge trimmer to even things out

I have a long hedge of overgrown sea green junipers. They are now growing into the street. Past owner did not maintain. The overgrown area into the street has thick branches that I cannot cut with any hand snippers. Saw seems best! What tool do I buy to deal with it?

I don't have time to trim our junipers the slow way so I want to buy a hedge trimmer, but I'm reading conflicting advice on whether to use those or not on Junipers. Dilemma.... Is it really that bad to use a trimmer?

I cannot find a good video on these bushes. In the summer if they're next to a house, a drought can damage your limbs & only the top growth is green. Mine is the blue juniper. Any dead will trail down the plant if you don't prune it soon. Any loose small areas can be cleaned up with a jet spray, but not too hard. The overall bush can be sprayed with the mist nozzle. Less chlorine exposure. Sometimes the dirt around the base settles. I use a cactus grade potting soil to build it up. Just like azaleas, these are acid loving plants. Ground orange or grapefruit peel will help with their growth around the bush. Use a natural mulch around the bushes. Rubberized mulch with choke the plant. If any of this info is wrong, let me know.

FYI - shearing most evergreens encourages tight, dense, outer growth which prevents light from hitting the inner stems - resulting in die off of that inner growth. Now when a pest such as spider mite or juniper twig blight attacks the plant - a large unsightly hole is left in your hedge or shrub. Not all evergreens can reproduce new growth along the inner stems to fill in that area once pest is eliminated. Also the back and forth cutting motion of electric or gas shears tend to make small tears on plant stems which encourage insect and disease to enter. The old style pruning which turns evergreens into geometric or lolly pop shapes is unattractive to those who know and appreciate a shrub or tree in its natural form. Take some classes at a Univerity so you don't stay a plant hack. AJF / Connecticut Supervisory license holder in 3 categories - Ornamentals and Turf, Arborist, and Interior plants. No! Plant boxwood if you want round!!
Those junipers will be dead in 5 years!! See the inside…dead! Trim them by hand so sunlight can get into the plant! Don’t come near my yard!!! 😮
