What is MiniOS?

MiniOS is a lightweight and fast Linux distribution designed for installation on a USB drive. The MiniOS project was launched in 2009 as a Linux distribution for USB drives based on Mandriva Linux. However, in 2013 it was suspended due to the liquidation of Mandriva. The modern version of MiniOS has been released since 2020 and is based on Debian - one of the most popular and stable distributions.

A distinctive feature of MiniOS is its modular approach to system configuration, which allows users to add or remove modules as needed. This makes the system easy to use and flexible in customization. Based on MiniOS, you can create your own version of the system by simply and quickly creating the necessary modules with the set of programs you need, creating your own unique ISO using our utilities. In addition, MiniOS occupies only 376-1790 MB of disk space (depending on the version) and can be run from a USB drive without the need to install it on your computer's hard disk.

MiniOS can be installed using popular programs such as Ventoy, Rufus, UNetbootin, balenaEtcher and many others. MiniOS supports booting from EFI and Legacy-BIOS and uses the same package manager as Debian. This provides access to the same repositories and the ability to install the same software packages.

MiniOS has an active and friendly community of users and developers who are ready to help new users and discuss new ideas and suggestions. You can join the MiniOS community to learn more about the distribution, get help or share your experience using it.

Thanks for the review! Unfortunately, MiniOS Minimum is the worst way to talk about the system. This is the only edition that is based on the previous version of Debian, unlike other editions that are based on the current version. Most likely, in the next update we will remove Minimum, so that users most often have problems with this edition, and maintaining outdated software is quite difficult.

I reckon it's a pretty lightweight Distro, these kinds always come in handy for older computers, and that unique episode was some awesome work :)

I've tried a lot of lightweight Linux distros, and this may be overall the best I've found. Runs great off USB on my old Eachine with a AMD processor. Very clean, fast, super stable and lightweight. Not a lot of software with it, but if you put Synaptic package manager on, there is just about anything you would want.

I tried the standard live system, from a USB flash drive . "Standard", is still rather bare bones, with no package manager, no printer manager, or CUPS installed. I want to play with this a little more. It boots pretty fast, and runs smoothly.

Using the live session is fine. I have ultra version of minios. Works great from USB.

I will check this out. I carry a Ventoy thumb drive on my key ring with various OS images (including Windows ugh) so I can help friends and family with their computers. This could be useful as a quick way to fix a machine.

Thank you for the review.
I think it would be better to install Debian/XFCE directly...

Wish linux didnt have so many forks/distros. Just seems like if they spend the time on maybe 10 vs 23043407309786 of them they would be a lore more polished.
