Do Not Hold Onto Possessions You No Longer Need

Miyamoto Musashi was one of the most famous samurai warriors to of ever lived and one of the key principles he left behind was “Do not hold onto possessions you no longer need”

Let me explain

Now what Musashi is trying to highlight here and encourage us to do is to let go of the things that no longer serve us, whether that be physical possessions or mental baggage. By holding onto these things, we weigh ourselves down and limit our ability to grow and evolve.

Musashi compares our possessions to leaves on a tree. Just as leaves naturally fall off a tree, we too must let go of the things that no longer serve us. This allows us to shed the excess weight and make room for new growth.
However, letting go of our possessions can be difficult. We may become attached to the memories or the sentiment associated with them.

But Musashi reminds us that we are not defined by our possessions. Our true worth comes from within, and by letting go of the things we no longer need, we are able to focus on what truly matters.

In the fast-paced world we live in, it can be tempting to hold onto things for fear of missing out or for the sake of convenience. But Musashi's principle reminds us that true freedom and growth come from letting go. So next time you find yourself holding onto something you no longer need, take a moment to consider the weight it may be adding to your life, and consider letting it go.

"Possessions are just as leaves that naturally fall off a tree". Such a simple, yet great reminder, thank you for this 🙏🏼

I needed to hear this. Recently things I didn't want to get rid of were donated and I just had to learn to accept I have enough and didn't need them anymore and someone else can use it. I don't mind helping people it's just the sentimental value of those certain things. A well

This is something I've always had on the back of my head. I always seem to keep things with me thinking I'll need them, even if they're broken. It's even worse in video games I play. Maybe I'll take your word for it and take a better decision next time. I might regret or I might not but it's better than being a junkey

Thanks for the awesome vid! I just have one question; if you've read them, what is your preferred translation for the Book of Five Rings and/or the Dokkodo? I'm planning on getting them but I noticed there were multiple versions so I would really appreciate some advice.

Great content and very well put analysis. Musashi’s works are incredibly pertinent today as consumerism strays us further from our natural state. Keep it up!
