In today's video I explain why I was wrong to assume Final Fantasy VI is a bad game and how after 20+ years I finally "get it".

Umaro is such a gem.
Umaro + Rage Ring + Zombie Status = Umaro leaps behind himself and throws himself at himself.

Nothing short of the greatest video game ever made, to date. Unmatched depth.

It's a classic... Can't go wrong with it at all. Glad you've come around on it!

Ff6 did not introduce the ATB bar. It was present on FF4 and FF5.
BUT it was improoved in a way that reflects more on the Spd stat and the haste effect.

It's the depth of storytelling and the fact they didn't overlook any of the backstories for its giant roster which is why I consider it the gold standard of Final Fantasy games. Well, maybe Umaro and Gogo are pretty much throw-in characters, but you don't unlock them until well into the World of Ruin that they can't really be fully fleshed out. There was a rumored backstory back in the day for Gogo that she was actually Setzer's lost love in disguise after she crashed her airship during Setzer's backstory reveal. As far as main characters go, I've always considered Terra to be the main for the first half and Celes the main of the second - another reason it's so great.

Lastly, a pro-tip for noobs: don't upgrade your Odin magicite to Raiden magicite until you've leveled up each of your characters at least 10 times with it as it's the only magicite which gives a speed bonus upon levelling up.

The way FFVI would surprise me as a player by always being surprised by shifting point of view into a different character (including Maduin, Leo, Mog, etc), even from the first moments when you're only barely in control of Terra, and then suddenly you're Locke, have always been so thrilling!

I think most peoples' favorite FF game is the first they play. Mine was VI, and I definitely think it's the best. The story is just SO well done. The characters are all great in their own way. The world is beautiful, and there are unavoidable consequences. I'm glad you were able to replay it and get immersed in the magic! :)

I first played FF6 around 2002, just after finishing 5 on PS1. At first I found it uninteresting because it was different from all the FF games I'd played beforehand. It wasn’t FANTASY enough for me. Around 10 years later I gave it another chance and for some reason my opinion changed 180 degrees. Now it's my favorite game up to this day. 9 is close 2nd.

Love this game so much. Literally just did an entire play through with students who are twenty years younger than me and we enjoyed it so much.

The whole team working together is just a beautiful tale. Never get tired of this game.

As a kid I always thought Kefka's poisoning of the water was the cause of the "World of Ruin". Then I got excess to the game long enough to finally beat it and that's when I found out how the "World of Ruin" actually came about.

Great video covering all of the important things! Music is what I am drawn to with these games, so it is always neat to get your take on that section of them as well!

Fantastic video, mate! You've got me wanting to start it up! (I still haven't started the Pixel Remaster collection 😅)

I always opt for getting the ragnarok sword so I can bet it at the colloseum for the Illumina (Light Bringer) sword, which is the best sword in the game. You can still learn ultima from using the Paladin shield (uncursing the cursed shield)

I've heard FF6 described as the Heartbeat of the Final Fantasy series it might not be most everyone's first game but it's the one that is the culmination (at least for the pre ps1 days) of what they wanted to be.

I appreciate your re-evaluation of FF6. The only quibble I have: Kefka is never actually happy, even at the height of his powers. He has a narcissism disorder and he is too isolated to be treated for it. That's one of the deep threads in the story and I certainly didn't understand it at age 12 when the game came out.
