In the midst of a tornado warning on Thursday night, a D.C.-area meteorologist took a moment mid-broadcast to phone his family and tell his children to shelter in their home's basement.

While NBC Washington chief meteorologist Doug Kammerer was on air tracking the storm, he realized the tornado warning was right over his house in Maryland.

“Kent, you there buddy?" he said talking to his son on his cellphone. "Hey man, I want you to get down to the basement. We got a tornado warning. I want to make sure you and Callie get down as soon as you can.”

“Get down there right now,” Kammerer continued. “Get in the bedroom down there and wait 10-15 minutes okay. Do it now.”

He resumed the broadcast as soon as he hung up.

“I gotta warn my kids, because I know what my kids are doing right now, they’re probably online gaming,” he told viewers. “And they’re not seeing this.”

It was more realistic and useful than a simple broadcast.

You know he was holding in his panic but he did great. I hope that his kids heeded the warning quickly.

As he was warning his kids, he was also giving out instructions to others as to where and what to do in this situation. Also, other parents would realize like hey my kids might be on their games too and didn't see the warning and end up calling their kids to take shelter. Great father and meteorologist!

Yesss! He helped his family AND the viewers to take it seriously! The vast majority of people see these warnings as just "experiences" and news to gawk at. How many people actually LEAVE to take shelter when the tornado sirens go off?? Most of the time (in a big city) I still see people just continuing their business like it ain't real. I always tell my son that we will probably be fine but this will help us get into the habit of seeking shelter -- then we grab "keysphonewallet" and a big blanket and get downstairs under the stairwell. We have never once seen anyone else do it in our buildings.

Wtf. I subscribed today and I've watched like 5 videos.

All were unbiased and wholesome. This channel needs to turn viral, like now.
