Thank God that crew member heard him and got the train to stop. Had he still been inside that stairwell until he got to his destination, he most likely wouldn’t have made it.

Googled it and some added details:
1. The train didn't leave early. He took a stroll and lost track of time.
2. The passengers ignored him while he was frantically banging on the window WHILE THE TRAIN WAS STATIONARY as they changed drivers.
3. When the train started moving, he instinctively threw himself into a narrow stairwell near the back of the train. Probably because almost all his belongings were onboard.
4. He likely did not realize how dire the situation was at first as he was video recording himself with his cellphone, and he said he "thought" that he may not have made it if he’d fallen off a train at 70 mph onto the rocks below.

It happened in 2009 not 1995. The train did not leave early he lost track of time and came back when the train started to leave and then the train stopped switching out the drivers so he started to pound on the windows of first class and no one responded. So when it started to move again that's when he hopped in the tiny stairwell. He did this because he only had less than 10 bucks on him and his documents, including his passport, were on the train. The reason why it was -7 C° was because they were traveling through the desert at night. And after a couple hours the crew member heard him and they stopped the train and rescued him

Also worth noting that he most likely left his belongings on board so that’s probably why he was going after it like his life depended on it. It probably did.
