"Hawaii Democratic state representative Kaniela Ing was first elected to the state legislature in 2012 at the age of 23, winning a five-person Democratic primary and then shellacking the incumbent Hawaii House minority whip by a stunning 27 points. Now, he serves in the House leadership as one of two “majority policy leaders” in the most Democratic state legislature in the country.

Now, Ing is looking to the next step: he’s running for Congress in Hawaii’s First Congressional District, a seat being vacated by Congresswoman and gubernatorial candidate Colleen Hanabusa. The opportunity doesn’t come around that often—just seven people have held the seat since 1970— and so naturally, Ing has a decidedly tough battle ahead of him: his opponents in the primary include lieutenant governor and former Hawaii Attorney General Doug Chin.

Ing’s accomplishments and quick rise in a party led by aging politicians—all before the age of 30—is notable enough. Perhaps what’s most interesting, however, is that Ing is a self-identified democratic socialist, a small but growing ideological identification among young Americans."*

Ye he is a true progressive fighter who will work his backside off for the people of Hawaii you know single payer health care, free college and a living wage but he forgotten to update his linkedin profile even though I have no idea what linkedin is I can not vote for him. Obviously I would vote for him if I lived in Hawaii and hope he wins a big Aloha to my brothers and sisters living in paradise and desperately working to protect the Islands from big oil and out of touch billionaires who keep buying up the land that housed hundreds so they can build a fence and totley miss the whole point of Aloha.

I’d like to comment on this as I live in South Maui and voted for him in the last election. I wish he would have waited to run for Congress until Gabbard runs for Senate. I can’t vote for him this time as he’s running for the 1st district. If he had ran for the 2nd district (much more progressive than the 1st district) at a later time, my prediction is that he would win because this area includes Maui County, Kauai and the Big Island. It’s extremely difficult to navigate the islands i.e. be able to fly in to Oahu to canvas neighborhoods as a volunteer.
