Why You Should Pay Attention to Julian Assange

Julian Assange has a long, complicated past. But regardless of what you think of him and what he did, you should care about what happens to him. Here’s why.

Check out two very solid documentaries on Assange for a deeper understanding of him as a person:
- Risk (2016), by Laura Poitras (we used a little footage from that doc in the intro)
- We Steal Secrets (2013), by Alex Gibney

What blows my mind is that killing innocent Iraqi civilians can be swept under the rug without any consequences but leaking publishing information about can get you jailed for multiple years.

Remember guys, the highest prize for pure and honest journalism is death.

The thing about calling him a traitor, is that he's not a US citizen and therefore has no obligation of allegiance to the US or its government, you can't commit treason against another country.

The fact the government feels so threatened, means we NEED to be listening.

I was working at TSA 2010-2011. When Wikileaks came out, we were told not to even travel to the Wikileaks website because we might be fired or found guilty of observing classified material above our security clearance, because we had access to 'Guarded' Information. Crazy times...

As an Australian, I am really ashamed of how little the Australian Government did to help/protect one of their own citizens.

Most literal version of "They hated him because he spoke the truth" I've ever seen.

I love how he is "being" arrested for exposing the crimes while the real criminals are the ones charging him.

Finally someone is talking about him. Everybody was busy with Musk's free speech but very less was talking about Assange's free speech.

This really shows that the definition of "crime" is created by power.

I recently came across this channel and have been pleasantly surprised. It's rare to see real journalism in YouTube that is delivered in a way which makes it both accessible and captivating. Fantastic stuff!!!!

I don't know the fact that he can be charged for being a "traitor" even though he's not even a US citizen is incredible to me. It almost feels like the US is implying they own the world and all are subject to US laws even if you're not a US citizen.

My respect for you went up 10 times for even covering this. If we let this man be incarcerated we make it possible that any journalist can be a criminal for their work alone.
