If you look closely, you will see why these landslides occur here so often. The roadway is sitting on 100% beach sand!

Dang that's a clean break. Had enough energy to fling the road into the waves. I just saw a video about these kind of landslides right after heavy rain. The coast is a tough place to build a road!

Wow... I grew up driving up and down the coast never would I imagine what we’re experiencing today!

That isn't a mountain, it is a sand dune that originally formed under the ocean, until Cascadia Fault pushed it up... now Mother Nature wants it back. That road can't be saved. It is going to happen again, and again, and again. Probably shouldn't have built a road on a sand dune in the first place, but, humans being humans, it will happen again.

Oh man, done that drive so many times. PCH is truly one of the most wonderful roads - by car or motorcycle. Hope we can repair it soon, it's the main in-out road for a lot of people.

I've driven this road many times in my life and it is one of the best drives through beautiful scenery but every time I drove it even in good weather it can be a bit scary, you are right on the edge in many places.

Just got done filming this road weeks before it collapsed. So glad I did. Who knows how long it will be before the road is operational again? Glad I got to ride it while I still had the chance.

My wife and I had been planning on driving this road for the last couple years. We were gonna drive it this June. Looks like I need to rethink the game plan. Very disappointing.

that has all the earmarks of a stopped up storm drain inlet...

Looks like a drainage culvert was overwhelmed and erosion caused the failure. By the looks of that hillside debris flow, this canyon drainage area may have been neglected in its routine maintenance for some time.
