Not a propulsion expert, but wouldn't it make more sense to land multiple thrusters on one side of the object and slowly shift its trajectory then to create more debris that could hit earth?

So what happens if it breaks the astroid in half n half goes but half comes at us. Also what if the explosion brakes the astroid into little bits wouldn't the satellite come at us or some of the astroid

What if we try this to deflect an asteroid and just have them hit something else and make an asteroid that MAY hit us change to a direct hit?

Size matters, even in space. So if you cant change the path of an object that's far out. Won't earth's gravity just pull that object in.
