Over the years i have flown through and above clouds, i always do it safely and the rewards are breathtaking! never had any issue with moisture affecting the drone during flight or since, i don't fly in freezing conditions either.

Not really possible to do legally in the US. FAA Part 107.51(d) states:

("d) The minimum distance of the small unmanned aircraft from clouds must be no less than:

(1) 500 feet below the cloud; and

(2) 2, 000 feet horizontally from the cloud.“


... there is no provision for flying above a cloud - even if it is launched from above a cloud layer.

First the bad - I'm astonished at how many people have bought drones this year and refused to comply with the legal requirements for their activities. Some of these people seem responsible, but all that goes out the window when it comes to their drones.

Now the good - we live in the South Wales valleys, so wildlife is always a concern. However, it's easy to hike or mountain bike above the fog and get some absolutely epic shots without interrupting the flow of life and being safe at the same time. 🙂

Flying above 400 ft is reckless and irresponsible as it endangers manned aircrafts. Those that want to photograph at those altitudes should rent a manned aircraft charter.
