In a key interview, Desmond Tutu talks of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's disturbing findings, and South Africa's way forward into the 21st century.

Knotting his forehead into an intense frown Tutu admits to his greatest anguish: "The reaction of white people generally in South Africa, to reject the commission. But one understood very well that this was one of the reactions at the revelations… that so much evil was committed, really on their behalf… they handled it by denial". Answering allegations of ANC bias, he points up Winnie Mandela: "She is the only person who had an 11-day inquiry… if the Commission had been the ANC's lap dog, that's the last thing we would have done." For Tutu the TRC was the only way forward for SA. We wait to see if the final report will advance the healing.
