Some of the oldest commercial planes still flying are Boeing 737 aircraft – although not all are flying commercial service anymore. Did you know that there is a sizable number of first-generation 737s still operating? Most of these aircraft are above or approaching 50 years in age. Simple Flying takes a look at the oldest Boeing 737s in operation.

The majority of my flights as a kid were aboard 737-200's, back in the 80's and 90's because that's what was flown into the small cities in the Canadian north - The fact those two aircraft from Nolinor are still flying is because they're the "newest" 737 series which came equipped with the gravel kits. If you look under the fronts of the engines, you'll see small tubes - these are bleed air nozzles that blow down to prevent gravel from being sucked into the engines and destroying them. Newer 737's have higher bypass (read: larger inputs) engines which, in combination to their proximity to the ground, make it impossible to prevent the gravel from coming in. As well, many of the sites Nolinor and other northern Canadian airlines fly into cannot have paved runways due to the expense in the paving as well as the fact the ground they're built on are prone to frost heaves that would damage the pavement. A gravel runway is easy to repair - asphalt, not so much.

I have flown several thousand hours in B737-200Advanced aircraft and they are great aircraft with wonderful handling characteristics. Wouldn't hesitate to fly one again any day.

00:16 C-GOPW was Captained by my Dad 30 years ago for? Yup. PWA Or Pacific Western Airlines. I flew all over North America in them both as a kid and adult. I had the privilege of the jump seat twice. once from Winnipeg to Orlando and another to Seattle from Vancouver with Dad at the helm.Since GOPW is still flying, i'd like to get my wife on a flight on it just to have her experience how wonderful vintage jet travel was and still is. Great topic. Thanks for the upload.

While never flown on 737-200, this is my favourite 737 variant. The design looked small and simple, yet cute and versatile.
I imagine that this is the jet aircraft version of DC-3. Sadly however, it won't be staying longer than or similar to DC-3.

I flew Air Zimbabwe's 737-200 from Victoria falls to Harare. Though it is a vintage but still smooth.

I once piloted a B737-100 ! One originally owned by Lufthansa, then sold to People Express and finally part of Continental Airlines. On one of these -100s I passed the checkride for my B-737 type-rating at Midland-Odessa in Texas. Later in Europe I flew the -300, the -500, the -700 and the -800. Excellent aircraft ! Alex Hendriks

Yes I've flown on 737-200 many times, the last time was in August 1986 on Air Europe from PMI-LGW 😊

One of the first flights ever on Southwest Airlines that I had as a kid was on a 737-200 from Nashville TN to Birmingham AL to New Orleans LA. My dad used to fly me back and forth from Tennessee to Louisiana when he was home from offshore. I had more frequent flyer miles than most adults as a child in 2nd-4th grade.

I first flew as a child in the early 70s on holiday to Europe. I recall flying on these first generation 737s as well as BAC 111 and DC-9s (which I think was the first aircraft I flew on). I flew on a DC-8 from London to Los Angeles via Maine in 1979. Comets were still flying European charter routes then but I didn’t get to fly on one.

Never been on a -200, but oddly enough, a few of the rare -100' s with Continental in the mid-90's.

I saw the Nolinor 737-200 boarding passengers at the gate right beside me. It was being chartered to transport some army cadets for an event in Ottawa. Normally I whouldn't have paid any attention as there were other newer 737s at the Airport, this one caught my attention because everything looked modern for the exception of the engine. Plus it looked like the plane was freshly painted with the Nolinor livery within the last 2yrs.

Flying in an old Boeing 732 must be an adventure <3

I flew in a 737-200 once about 10 years ago. Even back then I was astonished by how "different" the aircraft looked. I can see some riveted panels from the door which contrasts the smooth surface expected from planes today and the overhead bin was considerably smaller.

Back in May 2001, we flew Delta Express from IND to MCO. Both of our flights were on 737-200's, N242WA on the flight down and N319DL on our return flight. N242 was last seen in 2011 in Nairobi and N319 is stored at Victorville. It was my oldest sons first flight (he was 2) and we got to hang out with the pilot in the cockpit after we got to MCO. Got some great pictures and priceless memories.

I flown somewhere around 170 flights (my best guess) as a passenger on the -200s. Great plane! They have served their operators and passengers well, and it's good to know so many are still soldering on!
