You could cut the too-tall bolt cardboards down so that they fit on, your shelves.

Not only "Sears Roebucks, " but they even quit selling fabric long before it was just "Sears". I remember shopping for fabric at TG&Y lots of times in the 60s. Nearly every little department store had a sewing department. Sadly, it's hard to get fabric at all without having to order it. You may have gotten more of a bargain than you realize.
