What was obviously missing was the instincts of knowing when to go for the jugular. It was obvious over 8 years that Southgate didn't have it and nor did his teams. Mourinho's Inter had it against Barcelona in 2010 - knowing they need to go for a 2 goal lead in the first leg. Ferguson's Utd had it in 1999, knowing that they could beat Bayern right there once they finally equalised in minute 91.

If England had had that instinct in the past 4 tournaments, I think they would have won two and reached a World Cup final.

22 World Cups, 17 Euros...only 1 team has ever won with a manager from another 2004 Euro, which was an absolute fluke.... National managers won the other 38 trophies. Conclusion...national managers win team trophies. They don't need to be an elite manager...Scaloni U21 manager wins WC and 2 Copa America, De La Fuente U21 manager wins Euro. Neither were ever elite football managers. Choose Carsley U21 manager. Yes, he played for Ireland but he's English, born and lived and played and coached all his life in England
