I'm fascinated by the story of the man in chains. I've never heard this version about him. There are a lots of legends and mystery around this person. His Christian name was Veniamin but everyone knew him as Boyan the magi. He was the youngest son of the Bulgarian king Symeon. One of the few historical sources we have is bishop Liutprand of Cremona who was sent on a mission to Constantinople at that time. He writes that Veniamin-Boyan was adept at magic and could change himself at will into a wolf or any beast he wishes. Some sources claim that he started the Bogomilism movement which later expanded to Central Europe and was adopted by the Cathars in France. The Bogomilism was also a center of many stories of mystery and legends. Awesome episode!
