Part of the reason why they don't is due to the first world war. A pub became a place of quiet to drown out your sorrows in silence, when before that, pubs were bustling and full of song and laughter. The songs they sang while going into war haunted them, so coming home they didn't want to hear the songs that they once sang to bring comfort, it just gave the soldiers nightmares. Sadly this stuck and when the TV was invented and sports got big, the sports bars grew in popularity because it was an easy way to distract people from everything else around them.
