$150 Hot Chocolate Maker? Hotel Chocolat Velvetiser Review

Today I'm testing out the Velvetiser by Hotel Chocolat. In this review, I test out the unit, 4 flavors, and a couple of other tests.

You have made my day! I have a Kuissential Milk Heater/frother that I have had for many years and don’t use. I just checked and it holds the same amount of milk, 220ml. I chopped up some chocolate very fine, added it along with the milk, used the stirrer tool instead of the frother and just had the BEST hot chocolate at the perfect 145º temp! Thanks for reviewing this and giving me inspiration to do the same thing at a better price point! I’m going to be using this all winter long!

I have a milk frother that i paid $30 on Amazon. It warms and froths the milk. You could throw their hot chocolate mix in and get the same results as their $150 machine. I normally use a Ghirardelli's mix I get at Smart and Final. Just mixed it in afterwards, never thought to put it into the frother. That sounds like an excellent idea. Yum.

Funny story, in 1999 I worked at the cafe in Borders Books. We're proudly served Ghirardelli hot chocolate. But I saw some quik powder behind the counter. When I asked the boss what it was for she said "That's for when we run out of Ghirardelli, the customers never know the difference". LOL

We got a "Maestri House Milk Frother" a couple years ago and love it. Half the price. Many more functions. Going strong for two years and they tell you how to use almost anything in it. No voiding of warranty when you use real food in it.

For a coffee shop, I can see this in action. For my home use, unless I absolutely had money to burn, absolutely not. Glad it works well though and thank you for testing it out for us.

I've had my copper Velvetiser for several years now and really enjoy it. You can find other high-end hot chocolate mixes that work, but the stirring is unusually finicky, and it's not happy with most that you could use. Worth every penny to me, I use mine daily.

On another site review, a commenter remarked what she had for hot chocolate. " Maestri House Milk Frother ($89.99) and it's built and functions the same as this. It froths milk for my morning cappuccino and can also be used to make my hot chocolate in the evening. It also has multiple temperature and froth settings. The one difference is the Maestri House has all metal parts - no plastic, which I really appreciate." I agree, being all metal would be a plus. And at nearly half the price with additional options, it might be worth a try. Thanks for a good, comprehensive review.j

What temp was in the mug. You just said you warmed it up. But maybe not enough for chocolate to melt.

My husband has the self stirring mug and its longevity is actually very good. In fact he has had it quite a few years now. We are amazed it’s still going. He loves it 😂
