Unless the SR71 was having engine trouble or something of that nature, a mig 31 would never be able to approach a Sr-71 on mission. A SR-71’s mission altitude alone is outside the flight envelope of a mig 31, and that’s without bringing up the speed.

I know this story. A SR71 was having engine problems in one of it's Ram Jets. When the MIGs came up to intersect the SR, the US crew push the SR71 to it fastest speed possible and left the MIGs behind. The Cruising speed is 2000 miles an hour and top speed is 2200 to 2300 mile per hour (officially) with a range of 5300KM. The MIG's speed is 1864 mile per hour, Range is 3000km. It was build to catch the SR71 and could match the speed of a SR71 but for only a short time and distance. You got to love photo shop and it ability to fake photos or video like this one.

Mig31 top SUSTAINABLE speed is 2.83. top speed while the engines eat themselves is mach 3.2. .The SR 71 fastest unintentional speed achieved was mach 3.56 and the pilot said the plane was still pulling . The SR 71 could go a theoretical 4.5+ but would melt the airframe doing so. Heat limited. SR71 used titanium and fuel cooling, mig 31 used stainless steel. And huge turbofan engines.

The SR71 had not violated soviet airspace so there was nothing they could do about him. They were just sent up to Harass. But they did not know how high and how fast it could actually fly. He intentionally did not leave at maximum speed or go to maximum altitude... There were many other instances where an SR71 was intercepted but never caught. Even though many SAMs were fired at it, it was never hit because it could outrun them! A truly incredible plane... I doubt the we could build it today. Our engineers do not have the same level of Education or training that they had 60 years ago...I know because I am one of those old-timers who is now retired. 😊

Not only would a Mig never CATCH UP to an SR-71, but if the SR-71 was ACTUALLY on a recon mission the Mig would never get to its altitude.

My guess is that the SR was traveling at speed to conduct recon. Intel on the Mig suggests it was not operable or a capable threat at that altitude. Thus, there was no need to outrun it.

There was only one time any jet caught up to a SR-71 and it was because it had engine issues and Russia escorted it out of Russian air space. Russia stated at no point were any of their jets ready to fight as they were informed of the SR-71's engine issues prior to the intercept. There is a more accurate documentary of the incident.
