What I did to get rid of that "sketchbook pressure", was that when i just got it, i went in and crumpled up or folded some pages, ripped some pages or left tears in them, used it as a footstool and shoved it around on the floor. This really made it a piece of junk to me, and now my mind is totally and completely free to draw anything, i haven't felt any fear, ever.

I also stopped calling it a sketchbook, but rather a doodlebook. :)

After looking at many beginner videos I can't tell how how refreshing it's been to listen to your different perspectives on drawing. One of your first comments about having the right mind-set and attitude got me hooked. Hearing you say that drawing is not just about drawing was inspiring. I have one Staedtler 2B pencil and some Derwent and Crayola, yes Crayola coloured pencils and I will start with these because for me, starting is more important than waiting till I've collected all the "right" tools. I notice that you use Staedtler yourself, also Bic. And do you sharpen your pencil with a knife? (Looks that way! Classic!) It's inspiring to see that there are no boundaries so I'm now more willing to give it a try. Thank you Alphonso for the encouragement, and for your passion. It's catching!

As someone who sketches every day I can say that having a personal sketchbook is absolutely necessary. My personal sketchbook is like an extension of myself; I use it to study, try new things, get down ideas, jot down important or everyday moments, practice and just have fun! I do have other sketchbooks specifically for studying and such but my personal sketchbook is by far the most used.
I used to be scared to finish a sketchbook but now I must sketch on every inch of my book otherwise I will end up with piles upon piles of sketchbooks! I constantly find myself going back to my old sketchbooks filling in blank spaces and pages due to the lack of room for new books. XD

Perfect timing on this I really needed this kind of push as I’ve been losing a lot of motivation lately, thank you!

For me it definitely is a fight with perfectionism and it’s woes. I feel it hijacks my expectation management and blows them out of proportions. Thank you for this video, it’s great advice people should take to heart and a great reminder for me as well. Great job! :)

I draw alot of random Art like shapes, connected lines, mannequins, rooms shoes etc..

The funny part is i have a perspective book, Perspective For Trees, Classic Human Anatomy book, how to draw Dragons book and how to draw fruit😊😊😊

but i now after 3 years of drawing off and on I realize I can take something from each book and use them in my doodles
sketches

For those of you who arent good at drawing your not alone lol. but keep it up and never stop drawing.... we have days where we dont know what to draw and thats cool but try to make a list of things you wanna draw day by day short exercises in a few months or years you'll improve it's a slow walk but you'll be glad you did 😊😊😊😊

All my sketchbooks are random XD No specific pages, no define styles, no nothing sames haha XD studies: studies combined with my ideas, concept, doodles, realism, cartoons, eyes, monsters, animals, ... it helps me a lot to expand my knowledge . I usually first either reference or get the poses from my mind and than the opposite (reference and mind, mind and then reference to check). I rarely make masterpieces unlike today. It's not amazing; but an extension of my weird random doodles I liked. I just sketch ahead, almost daily because I'm full of weird ideas. I get inspired a lot and I hope it stays that way (even when I'm depressed as of lately, I feel like drawing helped me)

Your state of mind is one of the most important aspects of drawing.

Indigenous Australian art is known for its highly distinctive style and is the oldest traditional art style on the planet. Generally, the images are incredibly complex and involve drawing a series of dots that eventually build up an image. One artist spoke about his creative process in a documentary I watched. Basically, he described how he must prepare himself before he creates and enters a trancelike state.

Why? It's like he said, try and draw a line of dots, one after another and evenly spaced. If you're not in the right state of mind, you will make a mistake. So, he must detach himself and enter into a trancelike state. In this state of mind, instinct takes over.

It made total sense to me at the time, as I enter the same state of mind when I write or draw. It's a magical experience and I feel blessed since I've had the benefit of experiencing this with two parts of my art. However, I must say, writing has a deeper impact, personally speaking. When searching for the best description, in order to explain my writing process, eventually I found the right words.

"I free my mind as I speak from the heart and I allow my soul to find the words on my behalf."

When people say they're "in the zone", they are describing the same thing. When I sketch, I have a similar description as my writing.

"With an open mind, my feelings and passions are released, in order to contain them on the canvas in the form of an image. I trust in my soul to guide my hand and capture the image in my mind with the greatest accuracy."

Hope this inspires.

Thanks for addressing multiple drawings. I can feel guilty for not finishing my work but I appreciate what you said about going back with fresh eyes. Thanks you

Extraordinary Alphonso! Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I’m getting back into drawing and colored pencils after many years away. The Lord had other career plans for me, which meant no time for drawing, coloring, or painting. Now I’m retired and picking up where I left this off many years ago and enjoying every minute. Blessings to you!

Thank you for the having two sketch books is so simple yet brilliant! I've always struggled with the pressure of finished drawings in my sketch books and it's hindered my progress. Love your books, keep going and inspiring people you are awesome! Thank you for sharing your creative ideas and energy.

Just discovered your channel because your new workbook was recommend on The Mind of Watercolor YouTube channel. I am just discovering your thinking and teaching.

I can say, I went to college when I was 49 to pursue art. I wish the teachers were as encouraging as you are.
I took all the basic drawing classes and all life drawing classes. My best work was loose drawing with a dressed street model. I love texture and color and love to paint but my drawing is lacking. I have to discipline myself to really study drawing so my paintings can improve. Learning to see is the hardest. I am so spontaneous I just want to dive into the painting. I am almost 70 now and have sold some watercolors but time goes so fast I feel to be really good I would have had to do this work since a child. Thank you for using your energy and time to teach us who want to draw.

I used to watch your videos all the time and tons of other videos, then suddenly about a year or so ago I just stopped.
I stopped drawing, I watched videos less and less, and I’m trying to pick up the pen again but I’m so rusty.
This is what I needed, from one human being to another, thank you.
