One interesting contrast between Orwell's dystopia and the modern day is that while Winston was constantly looking to get out view of or totally avoid the government's always peering, always listening telescreens, people today carry a handheld version with feverish dedication every second of everyday.That's something Orwell could have never foreseen.

One thing you have to remember about the book is that Winston ASSUMES that it is 1984, but since they don’t use the Gregorian calendar (or any other calendar for that matter) anymore he just takes a best guess, so this still could be set in the future

Yes, we had a serious socialist party. The Farmer-Labor Party. It was seen as a more friendly version of the Communist Party. They held several House and Senate seats in the 30s and early 40s. It was folded into the Democratic Party in 1944.

side note: Orwell himself was actually socialist, but tended to veer more towards the anarchist aspects of that current

My understanding for the reason of the book title “1984” was that Orwell wanted this to be a book about the future and the book was written in 1948. So Orwell just switched the last two numbers around and that was, from his perspective, the future.
