Why no one Cares about osu!'s Biggest Update

Despite osu! lazer being released for ranked play after 9 years in development. Barely anyone plays it, so why is that and what's wrong with Lazer?

Other Links:

The idea basically came from the fact that my osu lazer video didn't really get a lot of views, which is when the realisation that the community doesn't really care about Lazer. Mainly because of the state it's in as well with the decisions being made by the osu! team.

There's actually a lot I wanted to say about the current state of osu & lazer, but I felt it would've made the video too mean and abrasive, so I filter some of my thoughts, but I do believe that this video is still a good representation on what I think about the situation with Lazer and why it isn't as popular, especially since it's been over 9 years in the making.

Final Comment about this video, since most of the replies are actually giving me brain damage
- Deleted the section where I address minor things that bother me in Lazer, since most of them were fixed
- Yeah there are some minor errors in the video, but they don't take away from the main point which is creating a divide between both of the clients. As well with taking so long in development to reach up to this point where the game is still unfinished is pathetic. Literally remaking the game with some extra features, not like reinventing the genre or making the game completely different.
- Me saying that I don't play the game anymore doesn't me that I haven't spend hours on the game or lazer before. I stopped playing before the game got boring and was disappointed with everything around it. The fact people bring this up really shows how desperate they are to make a point, since it becomes invalid once they click on my channel.
- Maybe in a couple years time lazer will be really good and does replace stable. I do hope that is the outcome for the benefit of the game's future, but that's a future I no longer am apart of since I've already lost interest in the development of lazer and the game itself

eh noo one is probably gonna read this

personally not having big titty anime girls take up the whole screen in song select and instead only about a fifth was enough to make me switch and get used to it

obligatory "osu! is lowercase" comment

I've been playing lazer for 1 year and honestly, it's not that bad like people make it out to be, sure there are bugs and problems from time to time but gameplay wise, it's pretty much a better version of stable if you disregard the competitive aspect and just focus solely in playing for fun. I've tried going back but the features brought by lazer was enough for me to turn away from stable. To conclude this shitty ted talk---Lazer is just better than stable.

7:50 That's what the Playfield ("osu" only) layer is for. All elements added to this layer will remain visible when HUD visibility is not set to always
7:55 There is a setting for it: Right mouse drag to absolute scroll
8:00 Still 2 clicks... Lazer just changed the first click to a right click.
8:20 I know that is more informative for other players giving them a heads up that other mods are not on the same level as classic. The problem that I have with this take is that these should be your problems. How is it a problem for you when you don't even play the mod?
8:25 That is just plain wrong. Lazer does not duplicate your files. They use hard links, an OS feature that lets you link to a file and if the file changes, it is copied. My osu!stable directory was over 120 GB when I downloaded Lazer my disk usage stayed the same. Uninstalling Lazer won't help your case unless you downloaded Lazer before the hard links change (added around October last year I guess) or I you changed a lot of files, aka files had to be copied.

After all this backseating, here are my thoughts on Lazer:
DT rate adjustment not being ranked is ass but it is extremely powerful. Changing to Lazer opens the 2 most important ways to improve in osu. Speed rate adjustment and difficulty settings adjustments. I am aware that osu!trainer exists, but having only 4 slots for presets is too little for me. Just to give you an example here is the training guide I follow:

1. Pick any map I find fun.
2. Rate adjust it so I'm between 85% and 95% ACC
3. When I get over 95% ACC I increase the rate adjustment by 0.05x and repeat

With this approach, I'm able to improve faster than ever thus having a lot more fun in the game. Your mileage may vary depending on what is fun for you. But for improvement-minded people like me, staying on stable is just stupid.

@8:28 This is false. It doesn't take up any more storage. Peppy did sone stuff with hashes and harding linking to appear that it duplicates as such.

6:07 idk how often this misconception gets brought up but the ms counter doesn't show delay, it shows the time between frames so basically just fps. You could have stable running at 5000fps which is 0.2ms and not get any real noticeable benefit because anything above 1000fps makes such a low difference in actual input lag which is why lazer caps out at 1000fps.

"Why don't they rank the new mods like rate change": because it's not as simple as just going ok yes this is ranked now, the mods need to be somewhat balanced and rate changes are already being worked on so this will be ranked in the somewhat near future. There is also a change lined up for lazer to give slideracc scores higher pp.

Many of the "issues" you discuss are things that are already fixed, things that have a setting to make them work as before or things that will change really soon.

this feels like you played lazer for 5 minutes and you gave an opinion on it

I personally really like lazer, even more than stable. There are some things I prefer from stable, but over time they've been adding more and more of those features, and I immediately switched to lazer when you could start earning PP, and I still use it. I only ever use stable to upload my maps, but once that's added to lazer, I'm probably deleting stable.

Also that argon skin/UI their working on, if that's the thing that will allow skinning in the song select, that's one of the things I miss. (and results screen as well)

You said you don't get any benefits from playing on lazer, but that's not entirely correct. In a past update, they made it so you can hit a slider at any point as long as its during the hit window. This means you don't need to hit early to risk breaking combo on those very fast repeat sliders. It also works the same for the ticks, even if the slider passed a tick, as long as you hit on time, itll count it and you wont lose combo. It does create some funny stuff with extremely short sliders, where you can hit after the slider ended and still not break combo, but I like that change overall. A little thing to help with slider accuracy.

Here is some info that I wish to clarify

traceable is also ranked, it gives the same pp buff as hidden

there is a setting for right click to jump around the beat map select

you can make the ur bar stay by putting it on the game play layer in the skin editor

It takes hardly any space to migrate maps to lazer unless you put it on a different drive (it uses something called hard links to save space)

Honestly, I love lazer now. At first slider acc bothered me, but now it feels better than stable, and I really appreciate the extra features

The "no-one cares" MFs when lazer would be no longer underweight pp-wise because of slider acc and DT rates ranked:

i don't really liked how the thumbnail, title, and description talks like no one is interested in osu!lazer since it's really the complete opposite. a huge chunk of the active community are excited for lazer's development, with the viewer count of each lazer updates on osu!'s channel and the osu!lazer daily challenge being proof of that..

though i do agree on some points, osu!lazer is still far away from being finished/polished, with many people still maining stable for some of its features that lazer lacks. i'm pretty optimistic that more people would start to switch once the skin editor is more fleshed out and more mods gets ranked which to me at least am excited about

also i don't know when this script was written but as for the inconveniences, you still need to press two buttons to access the beatmap page on stable and also some major ones are already fixed. the right click scroll on song select works on lazer and you can still see the error meter when hiding HUD by putting it in the "playfield" layer on the skin editor

Osu lazer will not duplicate your files but there is a small requirement you need to follow and that is that both your stable and lazer need to be on the same drive. When that is the case lazer will create hardlinks when you import the data from stable which basically copies the files without taking up any space until the files are being modified. You have your stable client on your G drive and lazer on your C drive which is why it had to copy the files.

honestly, i just don't switch to lazer cause you can't edit skins like stable, when they add that, i think many might switch

every people who are not in the community dont even know that lazer is an update to the game, they think its a bad copy of osu

i've been playing lazer for 2 years now and i find it to be much better. The slider head hit accuracy is acceptable because there is pretty much no notelock. The only thing that is currently missing from lazer is pp on adjusted mods

i have never played stable, and i was playing long before the bancho update. seeing the client progress has veen very interesting. the only complaint i have with lazer is how much of a pain it is to play maps with slider leniency in mind, and the lack of customization.

thank you! I dont see enough people talking about the fact that everybody would instantly migrate to lazer if they just made the classic mod a mod that actually gives pp

i WOULD play lazer if only they fix the performance issues because it just doesnt make any sense how i get 2k fps on stable but on lazer im averaging 600 fps with constant frame drops and lag spikes every few seconds no matter what rendering engine i use
