One of the major takeaways from this war is that China realised that the PLA was still stuck in the disruption and stagnation from the Cultural Revolution, and so quickly implemented military reforms to modernise the PLA and strengthen the command and control structure.

My uncle in law is a Vietnamese vet in that war, he always tell me story about him and his comrades when he was still in service. How they fight, they survive, even there was a time when his group was surrounded by the Chinese. I really love him

The funny thing is, most of Vietnamese force are reserve troops and local militia. Their main force was busy in Pol Pot's Cambodia, and when they're back the war was over.

This is using Chinese estimate for Vietnamese casualties and Vietnamese estimate for Chinese casualties, which are probably both inflated. US sources generally put the estimate much lower for both sides at 26, 000 killed and 260 captured on the Chinese side and 30, 000 killed and 1, 638 captured on the Vietnamese side. In other words, Vietnam actually suffered slightly greater losses, but the short war was of relatively limited scale. As far as war objective was concerned, China failed to achieve its military goal of forcing Vietnam to retreat from Cambodia, though Beijing did manage to heavily strain Vietnam's resources by adopting scorched-earth tactic that destroyed the economy of Northern Vietnam's border. However, Vietnam would then continue to occupy Cambodia for another decade. Vietnam's ultimate withdrawal in 1989 was more the result of international pressure from the US, China, and their allies, as well as internal economic difficulties.

As a Cambodian, I don't understand why the Chinese blindly believe that this is their self-defense war when the opponents of the Chinese regular army are mainly Vietnamese police, militia, old people and children. While the Vietnamese regular army is fighting the Khmer Rouge. And I cannot understand why the People's Liberation Army let the Vietnamese militias cause so much damage before the Vietnamese regular army arrived?
