Slander is illegal, and in the case of Trump and Vance, it was a hate crime. If the law applies to everyone, they'll get extra prison time for it being a hate crime. Vance already said publicly that he made it up. They both need to spend some time in prison for slander and extra time in prison for it being a hate crime.
