Actually, statistically most voters weren't better off under Trump. The economic indicators were all worse, including PPP. People have rose coloured glasses when looking back at any previous presidency and absolutely hate inflation. Inflation always feels awful, even when - as in the US recently - wages have increased faster than prices thanks to strong productivity and consumption figures, well managed interest rates and a resurgent labor movement.
