Delivering Radiation in a “Flash” Kills Cancer Cells but not Healthy Cells
Researchers at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory are planning to repurpose technology developed for defence programs and use it to treat cancer patients. The basic idea is simple—delivering radiation to cancer cells in a “flash” or within the shortest period of time, for example, within milliseconds, ensures that only cancerous cells but not their healthy counterparts get selectively destroyed. According to experts, FLASH radiotherapy may completely revolutionize radiation-based cancer treatment in the near future. This groundbreaking technique has been discussed in the journal "Scientific Reports."

Microbe from Antarctica has a promising treatment for melanoma (skin cancer)

When we see videos of the Antarctic region, we generally think of cold weather. Biomedical researchers have recently been successful in identifying a cancer-fighting molecule in an oceanic species. Cancer researchers from the Los Alamos National Laboratory and the University of South Florida have recently discovered that a skin-cancer-fighting compound called “palmerolide A” is actually synthesized by a microorganism living on the Antarctic sea floor. This is good news for patients suffering from melanoma or skin cancer. Palmerolide A inhibits “V-ATPase,” a vacuolar proton-translocating enzyme, with a high degree of efficacy. This enzyme is abundantly expressed in cells that cause melanoma or skin cancer.

New ointment destroys antibiotic-resistant bacteria

Biomedical research from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine shows that a new topical gel formulation called “AB569” destroys antibiotic-resistant bacteria that cause deadly infections at skin injury sites.

Massive Black Hole Discovered by Astronomers

Space scientists conducting research at the University of Texas have discovered a gigantic black hole inside the Leo I galaxy. Does it mean that you should abandon your weekend plans or stop saving money for your next birthday party? No, not really. This newly discovered black hole is not coming anywhere near our planet anytime soon. However, this space finding has enabled astronomers to learn more about the evolution of cosmic galaxies.

According to a scientific report, scientists have discovered dinosaur fossils in Chile. These fossils are 72 to 75 million years old and they belong to a dog-sized dinosaur species that used its tail as a deadly weapon.

Are you afraid of snakes? You shouldn’t be! Snake venom is frequently used to create medicines. For example, a joint team of researchers from Brazil and Belgium has designed a therapy from collinein-1, a protein found in rattlesnake venom. Although this deadly venom kills people, when administered in small doses, it can actually prevent the formation of clots responsible for causing stroke. Now, isn’t this an interesting scientific development?

Scientists have proposed a new model demonstrating how social communities and influencer networks come into existence. The most important takeaway of this finding is that content is supreme.

Sugary drinks can trigger the onset of dozens of lifestyle-related ailments and diseases including inflammation and type 2 diabetes. Researchers at the University of Illinois at Chicago have found an interesting association between sugar taxes and the consumption of sugary drinks. According to their studies, these taxes are highly effective in reducing the consumption of sugary drinks.

Researchers studying the effect of environmental toxins on human health have recently made a novel discovery: dicyclohexyl phthalate, or DCHP, popularly referred to as “phthalate,” can actually cause an increase in plasma cholesterol levels, at least in mice. Phthalates are commonly added to plastic to enhance its properties. They are also used to soften polyvinyl chloride or PVC.
