What is English as a Lingua Franca and who needs to know about it? The two Catherines discuss this and more.
This Youtube video is all about a video conference between Catherine Aygen & Catherine Lejtenyi who are talking about the English Language which is now considered as Lingua Franca. Here Lingua Franca means to say that a language which is basically adopted as a common language for two different people whose native languages are not the same. Presently English is the only language which is widely used by maximum people in Europe and all over the world as well because it is considered as an #InternationalLanguage. Now if there are two people who are not having the same mother tongue then they are left with the only option of choosing English as a common source of exchanging their thoughts, feelings and information as well.

Here, English language is not merely used for personal #Communications but if you are using the internet frequently then you can observe that the maximum of the websites are displayed in English which proves it is the only language which is used widely on various social domains for certain professional reasons. As a result, English is regarded as a shared language which literally opens the doors for better professional and social opportunities as well. Now when we consider the #EnglishLanguage as Lingua Franca then here in the same regard, many researches have provided that in the pursuit of arriving at a common level of understanding, many organizations are employing a range of strategies for the purpose of providing enough practice which is mandatorily required for properly utilizing this language. So, it has become very essential to integrate the role of English language as Lingua Franca in a designed classroom especially in multilingual kinds of environments.

A colleague once (in the 1990s) started telling the audience that he would deliver his speech in "bad English", the true universal language. People loved it. Today we have more refined expressions to define it, such as "lingua franca". Trying to improve my English as a third language has been an amazing experience as a much wider world has opened up to me. Please keep promoting this, it's an excellent way to deepen the integration of our very multifaceted and multicultural world. Rgds

Great topic, thanks! I think it's about time to change the name of the English language to: World language, as pretty much everywhere you go in the world, people speak various degrees of the language and it's expanding rapidly.

What I heard in this video doesn't surprise me, because I've read that when non-native English speakers are having a great conversation, sometimes a native speaker will enter the room and mess the whole thing up.

It's exactly what George Orwell warned about not only the dumbing down of language, but the manipulation of language in order to hinder expression and original thought, this makes it easier to control people socially.

The only thing I like about the video is using the term Linguish.

Isn't Lingua Franca defined as not being the native language of any of the people using it?

Also, English in no way is the only international language. When speaking with say Poles I will use German, French, Esperanto or English - whatever works. When speaking with Germans or Austrians I will use German (or Dutch if they happen to speak it), because it's more efficient than English

There are places where English have completely disappeared; In Great Britain, they have not used it for years.
