The glass mouse pads do have a micro texture etched into them. For optical mice you do want some amount of texture and perfectly smooth glass will not have enough texture.

I've been playing with hard mouse pads for years, crank the sensitivity way up and sink the palm of your hand down on the pad behind the mouse, the pressure you push down on the pad with your palm adjusts the sensitivity. Takes some practice but for fps shooters it's amazing for making adjustments swapping between long and short range

Glass, thick or thin is both hard to break when you hit the center so you gotta hit the corners if you were trying. I'm not an expert but it might be the color or shade of the glass that allows the sensor to detect the surface better.

Mouse pad glass is aluminosilicate (or something alike) glass, different from glass you'd get on a window, phone, table, etc

I recommend those glass mouse skates over a glass mouse pad, it does the same thing but is a lot cheaper than a glass mouse pad

The light under the mouse is what makes your cursor move and a glass mouse pad is a brilliant idea is makes ever type of game more relaxing and easier to play so I don't understand why anyone would hate useless they have nothing else to do
