My great grandfather was a doctor. He was raised by an Indian medicine man. He made a cough syrup by slicing a large onion sprinkling sugar between the slices and putting a weight on the top.mama used a jar that will hold the onion and a smaller jar of water for the weight. The weight will make the onion juice run out after a few hours. This syrup is a strong expectorant. He used it for coughs and to cure pneumonia. This was at the time they were just discovering antibiotics. His name was Ira T Smith.

I use something called onion syrup. I layer raw onion, fresh ginger and raw garlic into a pint jar until half full and then fill the rest of the jar with raw honey. I shake it on and off for 12 hours . It is amazing how quickly the honey thins to almost water like consistency. Then I strain it and use it like cough syrup it works amazing I give a tablespoon every 4 hours or so. This is great for most coughs and colds. It also has strong antibacterial qualities so can be used as a mild antibiotic. Store it in the fridge for up to a month

My grandma used to make us "onion tea" to break up mucus and help with upper respiratory issues. It tasted absolutely awful but it worked!!! Boiled cut up onions with peels included for a while, strained, mixed in honey, drink hot! She was huge into herbal healing, making ointments etc. I think she sparked my love for holistic healing, because all I use is herbs and nature to heal myself and family. Rarely pharmaceuticals!

My mom used to put onions in my socks overnight when I had bronchitis as a kid. Worked every time! Thanks for the reminder, Jess.

My Dad would boil onions and make us lay on the couch on our bellies and put the pot of steaming onions and water on the floor, and we would hang our heads over it. I used to hate it, but it always worked. Then we would go to Dairy Queen.

Another wonderful mucous breaking is the following recipe. 1 teaspoonful each of dried rosemary and thyme. Add boiling water and let it steep. (I do it in a teapot so about 2 cups water, but doesn't ned to be exact) Strain it and drink. Can sweeten with honey (also helps cough) and even add a sprinkle of cinnamon. I usually will add another lot of water to make a second batch. Drink hot or cold. An easy effective remedy

Another one to add to my medicine chest! I have used Usnea tincture and it works for quieting that cough while helping it work better. Every time it storms here we have usnea laden branches from oak trees dropped into our lawn and I call it a gift from heaven. Soaked in vodka for 6 weeks in a dark closet but shaken everyday then strained and kept in dark bottles. My SIL said it was the vodka but I only used less than a teaspoon in orange juice twice a day for a day or so and I could finally sleep. He got the dang cold then out of desperation and needing sleep, he tried it. Next day he asked me if he could have a bottle - it only took about 1/2 hour to work. I'm also going to gather mullein flowers this spring and layer them in honey in a jar for a couple weeks and have a spoonful when I need relief. It is sold in Europe with pictures of the Mullein on the jar but not here in USA - guess the drug companies don't want free competition. On this subject, I chewed a piece of basil (Tulsi) and stuck it over a mosquito bite and within 15 minutes, no more itch, no more redness and no more swollen bite. The kids were amazed and now go get a piece of basil and do the same thing and it works every time. Last night I had a big tick pulled off my back and then rubbed it with the first disinfectant I could find. I used a Clorox wipe (not recommended) but it quit itching immediately and hasn't since. Hope it reached inside to kill any Lyme it found. I think next time I will try homemade vinegar instead of Clorox) So much healing is available if we only knew where to look - God provides all we need and I thank him for this bounty.

When I was little, my granny was making something a little bit different. She took small cup of honey and put sliced onion into it. She left it over night melting. Then, she gave me one tea spoon of the "juice". It was not tasting good, but it always helped :) I wish Ezra fast recovery :)

Needed this last night for the 2 year old grandson. 2 AM sleepover interruption. Thank you for this video. He did not allow me to keep the poultice on him, but we got enough juice on his chest that he slept better for the rest of the night. I used water, a vadalia onion and one garlic clove. Thank you, thank you, thank you. I put it on a small white cotton sock and tied the end. So, I set it on my chest while waiting for August to fall asleep. My lungs and pipes are wide open and functional.

This was a popular thing that my great-grandmother would do when we had a chest cold. The only difference in what she did is she would make the onions fairly oily, and then save that oil to rub directly on our chests as the crud started to break up.

My grandmother used to make mustard plasters when we had bad chest colds. It worked great. It’s amazing how much the old poultices/plasters worked but are rarely used now because of “modern” medicine (that doesn’t always work).

Good for you Jess! My mom used to use onion and she also added mustard to it for potency. I had chronic Bronchitis my whole childhood and I think this is what kept me alive. Thanks again!!!
