The HILLARY STEP COLLAPSED on Everest? Is it Easier Now? #shorts #everest #mountains

The most famous physical feature on Everest, the Hillary Step, at 28,750 feet, is a 40-foot spur of snow and ice. First climbed in 1953 by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, the Hillary Step is the last obstacle barring access to the gently angled summit slopes. MANY believe that the earthquake in 2015 knocked a gigantic boulder loose, thus making it easier to ascend and descend this perilous landmark en route to and from the summit of Mount Everest.

It's kind of sad that Mount Everest is now such a dump.

It went from being the pinnacle of climbing to a tourist trap for the rich

When Tenzing and Edmund did the first assent it was an ice chimney….Edmund chimneyed his way to the top of the step then set a rope for Tenzing. For those still wondering, after Edmund’s death, Tenzing wrote in his book that it was indeed Edmund Hillary who first stepped on to the summit. They stayed about 15 minutes. Edmund looked for evidence of Mallory and took photos before sharing some sweeties (lollies) with Tenzing. Tenzing left some lollies for the mountain. What an amazing feat.

My dad’s friend summited Everest, he told my dad “Each time i passed by those bodies, my mood changed completely, it was like the world around you just stopped when your eyes fell on those who perished.”

In his thin book >High Adventure< about their historic first ascent Ed Hillary describes, how he and Tenzing Norgay stood at the foot of a nearly vertical rock wall of twelve metres height in an altitude of 8790 metres, already nearly at the end of their strength. His lively narration of how he and Tenzing overcame this final - then nameless - obstacle before the summit is breathtaking. Many books have been written about the first ascent. Ed Hillary's >High Adventure< is the best, laconic, no heroic posing, humble.
My dear late grandfather told me the story of Hillary and Tenzing, and these two men became the heroes of my childhood, together with Muhammad Ali and Howard Carter, the discoverer of the tomb of Tut Ankh Amun. They are my heroes to the present day.

There isn't enough money in this world to get me to climb Mt Everest.

Yayyy. A video I requested some time back. Would be great to show the camera and drone shots that have been taken. It is a drastic difference. In fact, you can see where the step boulder fell to. The only downside I wonder about is whether those who are summiting after the quake will be considered less than, whether it will be considered less of an achievement. I'm surprised that hasn't already happened.

Must’ve been epic in 1953, but it is a massive instagram tourist landfill now.
