It doesn't celebrate the emancipation of the slaves, it celebrates when the slaves actually found out they were free. In the south, even after the civil war, the slave owners just didn't tell their slaves that they had been freed. It wasn't until Union troops arrived in Galveston and forced the slave owners to release their slaves that they were actually freed.... just setting the record straight.

But federal holidays are only recognized by federal employees. Everyone else it’s just if your employer decides. Just like Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Memorial Day, Presidents’ Day.. federal holidays only really apply to federal employees

June 19th was made a federal holiday in 2021. Maybe this boss didn't get the memo.
Ryan himself told us it was a federal holiday, "for those who don't know".

We worked it. We get the other Federal Holidays off. Wasn't even mentioned. My employer is actually very good to us but I'm going to reread my contract.

Employers, unless they're literally the federal government, don't have to give any holiday off if they don't want to.

Juneteenth has only been a Federal holiday since 2021, before that it was just an observance in some States. On that note, Columbus Day has been a Federal holiday for many years and isn't always treated as one, it's usually a trade-off for the day after Thanksgiving.

There's a ton of irony in being a boss and keeping employees in the dark about Juneteenth.

Slaves not told about their rights✅
Workers not told about their rights✅
Telling the employee/slave is against the bosses/owner's interest✅

December 6th is the emancipation. June19th is when the message was delivered to Texas.

Punchline is the employer will henceforth recognize no federal holidays.

Honestly, Juneteenth is stupid. First time I heard of it was this year, and I live in a predominantly black area. Just government officials looking for another day less of work.

My employer used Juneteenth as an excuse to trim back on the number of observed "holidays" Now we only get New Years, Christmas day, Thanksgiving day. No other holidays are deemed relevant. The reason is that they said it was not fair to our European customers to be closed on any other days. I am sure that they will chop Thanksgiving soon for the same reason.

It’s also the newest federal holiday so I can see how one might discount it on accident but it’s easy to look up and correct yourself

There are several federal holidays I don't personally celebrate, but it's irrelevant. They are federal holiday's regardless.

My current employer did this and so did the company we are contracted for.

It is only a holiday for federal employees, not anyone else sorry to tell you.

Seems like that's the best holiday to get off. Who doesn't want an extra day off in June?

I was sent home on Juneteenth for wearing a Juneteenth shirt. Previously, the only enforced dress code was "no logos" but now the pharmacy "medical professional" dress code has been dusted off!

Columbus Day - no problem. President's Day - of course. Juneteenth - now wait a minute.

It was signed into law back in 2021. That boss SHOULD have known about it, but I didn't, until now. The only holidays I got off at work were Thanksgiving and Christmas. People in the service industry don't get many federal holidays off.
