Imagine an FPS game where your camera forcibly looks down as your character grabs a mag from their pocket

Holy shit is that Chris Redfield from the horror game series and media franchise created by Capcom, consists of survival horror, third-person shooter and first-person shooter games, with players typically surviving in environments filled with zombies and other creatures, Resident Evil ?

I love how even his facial expressions (or at least his eyes) were animated as well

Edit: Wow didn’t expect to get this many likes! Thanks 👍

A few thoughts as someone who has spent time on a two way range.. You develop muscle memory through repetition. Reaching down to grab a magazine from your belt or plate carrier becomes second nature. The only times I can recall actually looking down like that during a reload is when the magazine got caught up in a comms cable or a drinking tube while pulling the magazine from the pouch. These involved aluminum mags which have sharper corners on the magazine body which snag a lot easier unlike the Pmags which have softer angles.

The only time you would roll the rifle over and check the ejection port like that is if the bolt locked to the rear prematurely. In real life you get a feel for when you’re at the bottom half of the magazine and you physically feel the bolt lock to the rear on the last round. You expect it. There is a kind of jolt as that forward energy transfer doesn’t take place of the bolt slamming forward. You appear to have nailed that effect. That said, there is nothing wrong with checking the chamber area it just adds an extra step and time to the reload process.

Pulling the rifle into your body is correct, it just brings everything closer and mags the reload easier as everything is close by in a common work space. When inserting a magazine on a closed bolt there isn’t a need to slap the mag. Pushing it in with some force is all that is needed. Though after you insert the magazine on a closed bolt either through just forcibly shoving it into the magwell or using the Hollywood slap, once you hear that “click” of the magazine catch, you want to give that mag a little bit of a tug downward to make sure it seated before attempting to pull the charging handle. That little “click” lies sometimes. This insures the magazine is full seated and won’t eject itself when you attempt to load the rifle. You don’t need to do the tug check when loading on an open bolt though as the clear chamber area easily allows the magazine to be fully inserted with no resistance. The Pmags have an over insertion tab on the back of the magazine to keep the magazine from being over inserted which can damage the magazine.

The final human animation that you might want to think about tweaking is the elaborate adjustment when using the selector switch. In real life there isn’t any movement really simply because of how the selector switch works, you’re just sweeping your thumb. I get why games do the movement when using the selector though as it is a visual clue to the user that the safety is off or the rate of fire has been changed. That said, I’d tone it down a bit. The click going from safety to semi should be quieter than the click going from semi auto to full auto. Going from semi-auto to full there is an audible “click” as is there an audible “click” going from semi-auto to safe, but going from safe to semi-auto is fairly quiet. The click is almost non-existent. I’m not sure why this is but in every full auto M4 I was issued, this was the case.

A few rifle animations that seem to be missing are the bolt catch tilting out when the last round is fired. As well as the magazine catch moving outward on the left side of the rifle when the magazine button is depressed. The magazine catch will also move slightly outward when inserting a magazine on reload.

Like I said just some thoughts out loud. I really like how far animations for FPS’ have come in the past few years. It adds a lot to the immersion and for me, the over all enjoyment of a game as I find it hard to ignore when something is just modeled incorrectly or with lazy cut and paste animations.

This is a great attempt at making something feel more immersive. Great job. :)

This is insanely outstanding animation. I dont understand why triple A games dont have this kind of quality. Looking down to grab your mag is truly a nice touch. Masterpiece!

The eyes tracking what the character is actively doing is a nice touch.

You should test with making different animations for different ADS speeds. Also remember that people have muscle memory, so usually you wouldn’t want to look down at the pockets when doing mags otherwise you make yourself vulnerable by taking your eyes off your surroundings. Eyes are an awesome touch especially when inspecting the mag. Both eyes should be open unless using a scope, and even with a scope it is usually preference. Overall an awesome conceptual showing and I hope to see this done in future FPS games.

I kinda love how the camera actually follows Chris grabbing a new mag, kinda wish that animation was implemented in more games

Very unique, well done! I do appreciate when he looked down to grab a magazine, sometimes people can be untrained or not used to pulling from a specific style chest rig and have to look every so often to see you're getting it right. ❤️

The eyebrow moving when hes inspecting the magazine is just perfect

Sick work man, posing is nice all around. Usually that's a weak point in people's TFP anims

Damn, if only this is how CP2077 looked when modded for 3rd person. But instead, we got...something really special that should've never been attempted in the first place.

Absolute perfection in quality right there dude. Love how he actually looks down at his weight to grab a spare mag. Nice touch.
