This is the fifth part in a series of videos looking at sparring with a Jo (staff) in Aikido.

The focus of the series is to look at the different types of staff that can be used in sparring and the pros and cons of each Jo. The other thing we will be looking at is if any Aikido is used. Can Suburi and Kata be applied in sparring?

This episode will look at what Aikido can be used in sparring.

Do you spar with the Jo and can you see any Jo movements that were miss or that weren't applied in these videos? Let me know in the comments below.

Brilliant! Finally an Aikido teacher who treats Aikido as a weapon based martial art with open hand elements!

I've only known one other sensei who taught Aikido this way. He used to do three round sparring sessions. Round 1: Both armed with jo. Round 2: one armed, one unarmed. Round 3: switch.

This way we practiced our jo work and disarms/locks/throws against an armed opponent.

Love it. Finally another Aikidoist that sees Aikido is applicable to real combat.

Excellent demonstrations - including one handed strikes - not easy to find Aikido pressure testing!!!

Outstanding series. It is very rare to find real speed sparring in Aikijo. I have to wonder though why you spend two thirds of the content explaining why padded and plastic training weapons are inferior. Could have just started with the rattan, and briefly mentioned how inferior plastic weapons are, and had three sessions of rattan sparring instead. Loved the slow mo analysis. Thank you! Also, sparring without grappling is dangerous. It creates bad habits. The most important aspect of impact weapons combat is preventing an adversary from closing and nullifying the advantage of your weapon.

Now THIS is for real! So glad I came across this! Congrats, guys! Incredible stuff! I'll stick around hoping to see more!

How did you guys started the "game"? Any other progression besides the different materials of the jo? You seem to be pretty confortable already.

Tks and congratulations again!

Great stuff! Have been looking for ways to get my club here without compromising the weapons completely. Will look up more of your stuff. Do you have an equipment list breakdown somewhere? I understand some of this is custom made?

Very nice, I like to see traditional martial arts sparring, especially with weapons. The only thing that is off is there are a lot of double hits, I didnt think Aikido would allow this as the footwork when doing kata takes you off line.

Nice work with sparing. I practice freestyle Nunchaku and I dont do any sparing my art is for self improvement and meditation type therapy. but I can relate I have practiced sparing in other martial arts and I see the value of it and your channel. nice work keep working at it. maybe we could colab on some of the other aspects of martial art.

Great to see some jo sparring finally! Quick question; hand protection has always seemed to me a serious issue with jo. Even with the cross guard on long sword, hands are quite vulnerable. Even a lot of the successful parries appear to contact very close to the hands. Did you find any strategies in your sparring for protecting the hands?
