Welcome to the Martial Arts Journey YouTube channel!

My name is Rokas. I'm a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what it promises.

Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton.

After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my YouTube channel called "Martial Arts Journey".

Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries.

Pulling off these techniques in a bjj scenario where instead of forward and back pressure, both are trying to go to the ground, is quite a feat. Shows good understanding of the techniques. So, kudos!

"I tried something...and he went to the ground" lol classic

That is why you learn MMA before you learn aikido. You don't just force techniques. You apply them when the opportunity presents itself. It is the same in all martial arts.

The best Aikido practitioners I have ever know, were Judo black belts.

O'Sensei said that, in a practical situation, "atemi is 90% of Aikido". The ability to place a powerful and accurate strike to stun, distract, or unbalance your attacker, is a prerequisite for all true Aikidoka.

I really love it that you are still trying to prove that aikido can be used outside of practice. As a martial artist, I truly want to see you make aikido shine the way it used to

I hit that kotogaeshi one A LOT in no gi, it just takes a lot of setup and u have to do it while you're still dry lol. Get a russian tie(2 on 1) and prep the grip on your hand closest to their hand. And then when they try to extract their arm from the 2 on 1 get the grip with both hands and send it. People usually just tap, but I've hit the actual throw a couple times

What people don’t seem to understand is that Aikdo isn’t an art where you shake hands then the get into a sparring position to grapple. It’s for when people are coming at you full force with an attack. Hence the Seagal clips in the video where people are doing just that. The more energy in the attack, the better Aikdo works. If you want to stand and spar with an opponent you do BJJ, boxing, Muay Thai, etc. But that’s not to say Aikdo can’t be offensive, especially at higher ranks and years of practice. There also is free form training at least in the better aikido dojos.

Im not a fan of Aikido, but i enjoy watching your journey. Everything can be effective with enough real situation practice. Keep it up.

If you want Aikido to work against people who are fighting back, you need to train it against people who are fighting back. It’s the same with every single other martial art out there.

This is something most aikido dojo aren’t known for.

After some years of Karate and Kick boxing in the 80’s I was talked into doing Aikido. I was attacked twice in real life by street tough guys - a drug dealing Jamaican gangster and a road rager. I used Muay Thai teeps to gently keep him back, and I only ever did the minimum as they were clearly mental, he finally lunged and grabbed my shirt, I tai sabakied (aikido spin out badly spelt), he ripped my shirt off almost, then he jumped in my car and stole my keys from the ignition. I kotegeished his wrist and he threw out the keys into the motorway with his other hand. The other guy punched at me through the window, I blocked them kotegaished also. Aikido works in finishing for me if you know how to kick box / fight first. It’s very handy especially in fighting MMA guys whilst standing, as they don’t know the basics of the balance triangle of feet, as I found out doing MMA against giants who were shocked by those basics. What fun! Martial arts are like a superpower. We do it to know we are not merely the body, not to fuel the ego which ends in destruction.

Well some would say that in a fight the goal is to put the other guy on the ground. So I would say you did very well.

If your opponent needs to pull guard, then that means the technique worked...

Skidoo is basically a sport where you have to throw yourself. It won’t work on anyone that doesn’t do akido 😂

That last one looks a lot like tai-otoshi (a judo throw)

What people don't seem to understand is that if you do the technique full force against a fully resisting opponent, they won't role, the arm or whatever joint will just break

Kote Gaeshi is a forearm return, to redirect a tanto back upon its owner, it's not a throw per se. The flying through the air thing is simply a spectacular escape.

Combine Judo and Aikido.

Choose Kyokushin Karate, Muay Thai or kickboxing as your basic.

Now you're ready to kill by accident
