Halfpipe Ramp Surface Options - Skatelite Masonite SkaterBlend

Hopefully your budget will allow for a higher grade surface than masonite. Most ramps built use masonite because it's easy to get and cheap. But get ready to replace it once it gets a good soaking.

Masonite - Cheap and easy to get but does not hold up outside.

About 8 years ago I bought the poly board from the Canadian company.  I live in Salt Lake City Utah so this seemed like a great option and as stated in the video, cheaper cost.  It was great.  The only downer at first was the black surface in the summer made the riding surface 120 degrees plus.  So you got tired pretty quick.  Then in the 3rd summer it rode slower and became a much softer surface.  This continued the next summer.  It was bad enough that I had to go back to ply wood painted white which at least made the ramp surface in the summer 80 degrees.  For the cost it wasn't worth just 3 years of use.  I have found non skateboarding uses because its still weather proof and all.  I'm looking into the ramp armor now.  Ply wood only last a year and half or so out here.  Good luck!

Ramp Armor is, technically speaking, a Single X Paper Phenolic Sheet which is a standard item in the electrical insulation industry. It has been around for years and years. It just so happens to be a good skate surface. Save money by buying it like that. The colors are just the top cover on the sheet - largely irrelevant except preference. Just ask for it as Single X Paper Phenolic in 4x8 sheets and save money. It is exactly the same thing - not sort of- but exactly. In the Insulation industry, Ramp Armor is a higher rated product (the Single X rating) than Skatelite because it has a higher resin content therefore giving it better wear and longer life due to moisture and IV resistance. Single X Paper Phenolic Sheets in 4x8 - that’s how you buy it.

Masonite is still the best skating surface when it is new -forgiving and smooth unlike the unforgiving harsh more institutional used marine grade versions like Skatelite and Drumlite -you just have to commit plan to change Masonite every year or two in a humid climate.  Masonite's big disadvantages are durability, dusting/exhausting, and screw backing out/exposure over time -you have to sweep it constantly and it's honestly not good for your lungs in indoor applications. Masonite's advantages are cost and gigantic soft landings from airs and sweeping sick reverts on a surface still stickier than Drumlite and Skatlite. Mopping Masonite with Coca-Cola and water regularly keeps it from dusting so much. Don't use Pepsi because nobody has ever done anything cool on a ramp with a Pepsi product involved..i kid kid

Now, most skaters won't understand this next part until they get older -Masonite ramps are more forgiving on impact and less injury generally occurs on Masonite surface versus the super dense surfaces like Skatelite and ofcourse concrete  -That's 30 years of experience riding ramps of all types

-So Masonite is sort of a love/hate thing for most people -its a pain in the ass to maintain -but cheap and safer and arguably more fun for airs and revert/combo tricks if you keep the screws from backing out and the water off it that is.

Also Skatelite and those pro surfaces are great -just harsher because they are made for a durability cycle rate that nobody on a backyard ramp usually has -unless the house is abandoned.

Have fun

What would you recomend for a ramp outside in the Florida humid weather so it won't deteriorate

We used to kick out plexiglass bus stop sheets that were perfect 4x8. Counter sink screws. That was in late 80’s. Don’t think bus stops have those anymore? So just roll with Masonite people if it gets damaged just replace as simple as that.

Skatelite is forever the best you can get, best product and the best crew. Only thing better is concrete
Price wise you can't beat Skatelite for its quality and has 'factory blemished sheets' (which are still 100% perfect quality) for only $75 a sheet with a flat freight Shipping of $350.

Masonite indoors is great surface for the top layer of ramp.

It's all about what you can afford and also whats available to you. Masonite will work but you must cover it with a tarp. Having said that it only takes one time to forget to cover it and its near ruined. Also you get a lot of wind there so it would be easy for a cover to fail. If I were you I would get Skatersblend or ramparmor. If you cant afford it you can use a second layer of plywood for the skate surface. It's not as smooth of a ride but it will hold up a lot longer than masonite.

If I used the ramp armor and it rained alot, wouldn't the ply wood underneath the armor get warped just like the masonite would?
