Don't take the joy out of reading, just start, read a little, absorb it. Best tip ❤️

On the conversation of academia: I agree. There's something so romantic about being somewhere for the purpose of sitting around and thinking and learning all day.

I would really recommend 10 minutes 38 seconds in this strange world by Elif Shafak if you haven’t read it. It seems completely up your street and was one of my absolute favourites from last year.

Stoner by John Williams is a fantastic campus novel. You also may like Tana French's The Likeness, an Irish detective novel that heavily nods to The Secret History in a great way.

Yay!! You have awesome taste and so glad to see a Bookshop.org link. I work for Bookshop US and can attest to it being a great company on the inside as well.

Lizzy I think you would like The Idiot by Elif Batuman! It's also a campus novel, like The Secret History. The narrator is so odd and funny and it follows her as she begins uni at Harvard in the 90s. Selin's study of linguistics is incorporated in a similar way that The Secret History weaved their study of Classics into the themes of the book. I don't think it's dark academia but I do think it fits what you're looking for!

This is one of my favourite videos of you have ever uploaded Lizzy - I don’t know whether it’s the subject, the setting, the light, or just the overall feel of the video, but it left me feeling all warm and completely relaxed. You should definitely film more videos with this background! It looks lovely ☺️

I go in and out of reading slumps so frequently. I find that books of short stories, fast paced books (particularly crime/thrillers) help. Also I make a judgement on a book based on the first chapter or 2, if I’m not enthralled pretty much immediately, I put it aside. This was the exact video I needed right now, good job Lizzy!

Lovely selection of books, Lizzy. I’m also struggling to focus on books lately. Reading in much smaller chunks than I am used to do. Love that you included Iain Reid’s novel. I worked with his dad in Ottawa back in the late nineties. He was an English teacher at the time, and Iain was a teenager.

Thanks you. Really been struggling to get back in to reading and reading fiction in particular but I love the way you are so passionate about books. How you remember them all is a-maz-ing.

I’ve followed your Good Reads over the passed year, I’ve read a few from your recommendations. I who have never known men - Jacqueline Harpman opened me up to the world of dystopian novels this book, like you said has stuck with me for so long. Also an honourable mention for Lanny - Max Porter everything about this book had me gripped plus the layout of text was incredible.

if you're looking for another dark academia book, i absolutely adore If We Were Villians by M.L. Rio. It's set at an elite arts college and follows one of seven young actors studying Shakespeare and is very much dark academia at heart🤍

I'm so excited to be following you on goodreads! I'm AMAZED that you read so many books last year and that reading 60 books would even be possible for you this year. I read 14 last year and am hoping to make it to 20 or 30 books this year, but I agree about reading for fun and not putting too much pressure on it. I've been enjoying reading Ottessa Moshfegh's books, particularly Homesick For Another World (short stories) and I just finished reading Eileen. She has such a unique and darkly funny way of writing that I find so interesting!! I highly recommend if you haven't read any of her books yet. I'm so curious to check out some of the books on your list!!
