We have 9 tegus and 2 savannas. Tegus are definitely better for most people. But if you can put in 2 years of work, a savannah can be far more placid than any tegu. All of our tegus have a possibility of bites, but our savannahs do not. Tegus are better right out of the box, but a sav could be better in the long run.

This hasn’t been my experience with savannah monitors at all. My family used to keep them when I was a kid. We had four in total and out of the four, three of them were dog tame. The sweetest, most soft and affectionate lizards you can imagine. The only one who was aggressive was a rescue from an abusive household and even she tamed down to a degree once she was in a safe environment and we’d put in enough time to build her trust. The other three were all so tame that I could handle them as a child. The only times I was ever bitten were during feeding misshapes when our first one was a baby (he’d miss the food and end up biting my fingers) and by our poor girl who came from that awful household I mentioned before. They were the only ones that bit and only one of them bit me on purpose. The one we raised from a hatchling would let go once he realised I wasn’t food and after going through that clumsy phase, I could actually hand feed him with no trouble at all. The other two never bit once.

My Savannah is about a year old and gentle. Bought him at a repticon for 50 bucks. You have to handle them when young and I found tong feeding him helps. Now when he eats out of a bowl I rub his back and he lets me wipe his face to clean him up. He comes out when he sees me and always lets me pick him up and hold him to get some sun. After the first three months he stopped hissing and tail whipping. I have no regrets getting him

Nothing scarier than a pissed-off yellowtegu and they got serious teeth

Mine is 3, got him at 2 weeks old from a store in Florida, paid 45 bucks for him, he was a sweetheart in the beginning, 3 months in he DISPICED MY GUTS, BIT, WHIPPED AND HISSED 100% of the time I tried some contact, did water bonding floating him in lukewarm
Water and my hand as the only island to grasp to, that made him understand he could trust me, he made a 180 after 8 or so sessions of water bonding, now he’s still a cranky dude, here and there he pushes me out of his terrarium like a bull, head on, but never ever more biting, Whipping or hissing, I love this lizard, it was a real trust bond and this made it much more personal and truly bonding with your companion is way better in my opinion than buying a boring gecko and playing with it once or twice a week…

What an absolute tool. Ive had my sav since it was 2 months old, its now a year. Ive never seen such a chilled out animal. Both my sav and my beardie were out together, the beardie flared, he just walked by, of course i would never let them harm each other. And he sees my partners dog and her cat (looking out his tank glass) and he dont even achknowledge them. So no this guy is completely wrong. My sav has only bit me twice, once as a baby, and the other he mistook my finger for food recently. This guy is conpletely wrong.

I str8 up went to a reptile show and got a savannah monitor a month ago and it’s the chillest monitor/lizard I’ve ever had. It hasn’t bitten me or anything. It just sits around and chills on my hat or shoulders. It’s only like 4 months old but like with every animal you have to work with them.

I’ve had mine for about a year now (he’s two) and he’s been 50/50 with being friendly and “fuck off”.😭

Dude is crazyy... Savannah monitors are one of the most tame of the monitor family. And Savannah monitors mostly eat insects!

Savannah monitors can be awesome if they are captive bred

What are you talking about. I breed savannah monitors and tegus. All of my savannahs are puppy dogs. Seen more trouble with tegus. I do have some nice tegus. AND I HAVE SOME NASTY ONES. FYI. All my savannahs eat out of my hand

THEY ARE NOT HARD TO TAME DOWN! THEY ARE ACTUALLY THE MOST EASIEST MONITOR TO TAME BECAUSE NATURALLY DOCILE COMPARED TO OTHER MONITORs.. THIS guy has NOOO idea what he is talking about! And Savannah monitors are mostly insectivores! And they need high humidity!

Ssvannah monitors don't have a bad attitude in general. They tame down rather easy and they're quite chill, but they can often mistake your feet or hands food, and that is a very, very bad bite from a monitor lizard.
