Seems like MD's here in the States prefer to have as little verbal interaction with their patients as possible (which seems counterproductive to me!). So I don't think rapport even figures into their concerns here. Interestingly, when I was younger, I used to buy used books by the box-full at yard sales. In one such box was a med. school text that dated from the 1950's. I remember browsing through that book and noting that there was a chapter on doctor/patient rapport. -And not a small chapter, either! Almost seems like there's an anti-rapport agenda afoot here in the States. Last time I remember a doctor bothering to engage with a bit of rapport with me was back in the early 1980's. But he was not a young physician, what we would call "old school" and was very much at ease with engaging in rapport.
