Even if it doesn't have asbestos, it's still a good idea to wear respiratory protection when doing ANY construction related projects.

Even if you were lucky enough to have popcorn ceilings that didn't have asbestos in them, A LOT of houses do. When removing those kinds of ceilings WET or dry, you should always be wearing a proper _-N95 painters mask.-_ Even without asbestos, you have to worry about plaster dust, the coating on the ceiling or under it, fiberglass or traces of it, (not to mention the stuff tastes like glue) the list goes on. Never let the low chance of something descive you. And remember to wear eye protection.

Edit: As some people have pointed out, the proper mask is not an N95, I was mistaken and was referring to the kind of *RESPIRATOR* used by interior designers and painters.

I used to remove that all the time, I did abatement work. You might mention that a lot of the popcorn ceilings contain asbestos, that’s why I did so many, I did only asbestos and led abatement. Please people if you are doing this yourself make Sure you where a proper respirator that can filter out the asbestos. Make sure you cover the walls with plastic, asbestos fibers are so small that just walking through a room can leave them airborne for 3 days. They are barbed fibers that get stuck in your lungs, body can’t dissolve them, you get scar tissue, scars don’t stretch, your lungs will loose the ability to fully expand. I had to say something, I know people who have died from this, it’s a horrible thing to watch. There’s also mesothelioma. Look it up.

Better get it tested for Asbestos I’m a supervisor at an asbestos company and we do a of popcorn ceilings that test positive for asbestos. And the set up to do it properly takes longer then the actual job (scraping popcorn ceiling)

Word of warning: Popcorn in the 70's had asbestos fibers in it, so test it first and remediate accordingly.

Don’t forget popcorn roofs also are just super bad in a house so it’s actually not a bad idea. I’ve seen half a dozen houses where we removed this stuff. Holds moisture and can be a breeding ground for mold if it creeps into a house. Had to wear a full hazmat gettup in one house it was so bad lol.

My chemistry teacher said, asbestos is one of the safest fibrous materials to be around, if it’s not disturbed. But obviously…

Damn, good thing i read the comments. Wasn't thinking about actually doing this, but _did_ kinda keep it in the back of my mind without even considering asbestos

My uncle is a lawyer who specializes in asbestos cases. I’m scared to show him this video, it would ruin his day.

The only thing that wasn’t covered is that you are not going to get the popcorn ceiling off if somebody’s painted over top of it, unfortunately we found that out the hard way. Not sure about the asbestos Complaints and lack of a respirator but you’re usually OK for anything dated after 1985 (At least here in North America) But always use caution.
