In this episode of TFL Talkin' Trucks, Andre and Tommy discuss just where electric vehicles stand right now, and whether the crop of electric trucks coming onto the market in the near future are viable. Will they make sense to the everyday truck buyer, or what will it take to get EV trucks there?

I feel like there might be a market in the future for trailers that have their own electric motors and batteries that can be connected up to work with the truck.

Great show! It kind of cool that you keep the hood with everyones names in the new studio. I hope you will be able to do a live show again sometime soon, as COVID restrictions are relaxed!

I am based in Reno/Tahoe are of Nevada. If I choose to travel to Las Vegas/Salt Lake City, Boise Id, Klamath Falls, Oregon I can reach all of the above on one tank of gasoline with out stopping. the cost currently is #3.10 per gallon maybe 16 gallons$49.30 cost NO stops NO wasted productivity !

"Andre was in his jammies, he was ready to uh put on some simpsons and lay back, and then, of course, he's gotta go and cover truck news, huh?" .... Andre smiling and then " Yes" lol.

I liked just for this. Andre's quite the trooper. And Tommy, your sense of hummor is always appreciated.

Reminds me of a handful of Friday nights in the winter when I'm packing it in for the night, forecast is sunny/overcast for the weekend (no precip) look outside and it's just started to snow, and then the phone rings (any snow plow operators will understand).

35:35 Chevy Volt is an EV with a Range Extender. It's just the implementation of Range Extender in the Volt is much better and more seamless, so people think about the Volt as being a plug-in hybrid, even though it actually isn't.

When the power went out here in Houston this past winter (2021), not a single Tesla could be found in our normally crowded parking lot. It takes a source to create electricity, and when that source fails, guess what..? You've got yourself a 'boat anchor'...

Can’t wait to get my Cybertruck. I’ve considered just selling my Mazda and getting a cheap used EV to tide me over.

The right car for that is a 2017 Bolt. I just can’t get over the styling.

Range in the winter is a big concern for me. Hate to loose range just to keep the battery warm.

In regards to the impact of battery production - I would suggest you watch the Engineering explained channel. They have a great video explaining it. They also have a video about "How the grid will handle the ever increasing amount of Electric vehicles"

The other problem is the electric grid will not be able to handle millions of plug-in cars.

I can tow my travel trailer 16k# at 8mpg for 220mi with my Ram Cummins. There is no way in the near future an electric vehicle can come close to that weight at those distances. Too much energy per gallon in diesel.

26:00 The Hummer would take 5-6 days to charge on 110.

No one talks about combining diesel with electricity for a hybrid. That’s the best of both worlds and you would only have to over come weight.

Completely agree about coming out of the gate with the most extreme f150 lightning first. Mach E Gt should have been first but either way those Mach E are selling fast.

The Chevy Volt is electric motor power only. Even though it has a small Atkinson gas engine, the gas engine is used to power a generator to power the electric motors. With battery depleted to zero and driving in regenerate brake power I drove from Sioux Falls SD. to Omaha NE. On 6.4 gallons of gas.

PHEV it's quite ok I don't know why it's such a fuss about it... it's the perfect choice for the city and for long distances you don't get stranded and you drive it like a gas car/truck. Anyway the paralel PHEV system announced by Nissan sounds quite good, as you will have only the electric motors driving the wheels (instant torque all the time) and the thermal engine it's used just as a generator to recharge the battery.... we'll see.

I think overall, the answer is yes. I say this being cognisant that over 90% of people that buy trucks, never use the 'truck' part of the truck. So, given that fact, the vast majority will only use their truck to commute or take family trips etc. Makes me wonder why the vast majority of people buy them in the first place...but that's a whole different discussion I guess.

51:00 - Ford eTransit Vans still come with a $7500 tax credit. For businesses, that brings the price difference down a lot...now the $12k difference is $4500.

Tommy's got a very smart take for lighting name. it sounds like a good name for more universally-priced truck, not a first release flag ev truck .
