That's after the AfD won a historic victory in regional elections in the eastern German state of Thuringia and emerged the second strongest party in neighboring Saxony.

The populists, extreme left or right, once in power invariably fail and are removed from power to become a very noisy but ineffective opposition. An example is the PiS party in Poland which ruled for 8 years but was lost in late 2023.
