Showing how you connected everything up would have made this video worth watching again

Nice video. I have over 6000 LPs to digitize. So far I have done around 4000. I use a ua3 USB audio interface. The turntable, a rega 3 is plugged into it. I save the files as FLAC files.

Very informative video. As I get older I see more and more that everything is a learning curve.
Keep up the good work !

I use an ART Phono Plus Project Series as an interface as it has two important features: A built in, good quality phono preamp and a gain control to set the recording levels.
I do all my recordings at 44.1 kHz 16 bit and convert them into 320 kbps ABR AACs. I used to record at 96 kHz 32 bits and convert them into ALAC files but one day I decided to make an ABX test between both formats and I wasn't able to tell any difference on studio monitors (Pioneer DJ S-DJ50X), studio headphones (Pioneer DJ HDJ-C70 and Technics RP-DJ1210E-S), and hifi speakers (DALI Zensor 1) using two different USB audio interfaces (Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and Rane SL 2).

not sure if those(1:50) are RCA to XLR or 6.3mm jack to XLR adapters but if the latter is the case, you can bypass the jack to XLR adapter and plug the jack directly into the interface as the XLRs on it are jack-XLR combo ports.

This is a godsend! A guy just recently contacted me on doing rips of rare records for him so that he can hear them. Was wondering what equipment to get and how to use Audacity with the best settings. Thanks my man! ;^)

My RME ADI-2/4 Pro SE ADC cost me $2, 499. Ouch! But I can record DSD direct up to DSD256 and PCM up to 24bit/768KHz. I use Steinberg Wavelab 12 Pro for recording and editing, and I have a license of iZotope RX11 Advanced. It isn't cheap but they have some of the best audio restoration tools you can get. I also have a couple of plugins from Fabfilter: Q3 Pro (parametric eq) and L2 Pro (loudness normalizer/peak limiter/dynamic range compressor) I find all of this very necessary to rip vinyl with anything close to professional/transparent results.

My way to do it:
- Using Technics 1200 MK'2 + Pioneer XDJ-RX2 + audio interface (Mackie Big Knob Studio)
- The XDJ-RX2 has two USB slots. One of the slots has a recording option.
- Just use the set-up as normal: the Technics are connected to the Pioneer-systeem. And the Pioneer-system (and speakers) is connected to the audio interface.
- Put a USB in the XDJ-RX2. Press record and play the record.
- When the record is finished end the recording.
- The system will now generate a WAV file on the UBS.
- Put the USB in your computer and there is your WAV.
- You can use the WAV file or convert it to 320-mp3 with iTunes/Audacity etc.

Note: you can even record this way without an audio interface. The Technics are connected to the Pioneer system so the USB will record the master signal of this device.

Important: not only the system or the way of recording is important for improving quality. Start with your cartridge and stylus. Best is some HIFI cartridge. If you don't want to break the bank and still want to use it for mixing purposes too, try the Ortofon Concorde Club. This cartridge has an eliptical stylus and 8mv output.

Thanks for your tutorial. I digitalize vinyl for using tracks for sampling. I was hoping you will talk about how to set gain or what the maximum volume should be like to have the best quality. If you could give me some advise I would be very happy. Thanks!

Great video. Many thanks. It would be nice to have a part 3, or written instructions on the description, on how to took the wires. Turntable > Amp>Audio interface> Computer.

I have a Behringer U-Phono UFO202 ADC which also has a phono stage that I don't use. I just recently bought RCA to TS adapters which will make it simpler to record, monitor, and adjust levels in my DAW of choice as well as most likely improve the channel separation.

I have an old turntable, a erga planar2 from what looks like the 70's/80's. I just have 2 rca cables & an earth. I have a focusrite 2i4 audio interface. How do I hook up? what adapter do I need?

Good overall guide for someone to get started, but when I saw the RCA to XLR adapter then into the interface I audibly cringed. Why not just get the RCA male to XLR male cord? They are so cheap on Amazon for decent quality ones.

Great info, thanks. Can i record when scratching vinyl records over a beat for example? With this simple set up?

I pretty much do the same thing. After it's recorded I also trim the beginning and end where the needle dropped and lifted. Normalize the volume. I also back everything up since this is a sh*t load of work.
