As unreliable as the Protoevangelium of James is, it doesn't actually say what they want it to say... It says Mary was given to Joseph at age 12 primarily so that she wouldn't defile the temple, but *the marriage was never consummated*... And it clearly says later on in the text that she conceived at around 16 years of age... I've got to give it to them, these guys are master quote-miners.

We know that Mary visited Elizabeth by herself. We also know that she was a prayerful woman familiar with old testament scripture so even though there is no definitive evidence as to her exact age. It seems like logical to conclude that she was both considered physically and spiritually mature to enter marriage with consent therefore to conclude that in anyway she was 12 seems wishful thinking to fit a warped twisted narrative that the gospel accounts definitely don't provide
