I’m even surprised you were requested with that

isnt it just 20 since the overlap should be 2 (from 14+8-20) and 2x10=20?

My first thought was add the areas of the 10x8 and 10x14 rectangles and subtract the 200 for the 10x20 rectangle. Love that there are multiple ways to get the same answer.

I did it like this:
The unknown lenght of the rectangle is the same as the overlap of the 2 known lengths.
I make a formula: 20 = 8 + 14 - X
swap it up : x = -20 + 8 +14
add it up: x = 2
now for the rectangle: 10 * 2 = 20 sq. units

This one made me feel smart, which I appreciate because they usually make me feel dumb. Thank you.

I just did 20-14 to get 6 and then 8 - 6 to get the remaining 2 and then 2 x 10 for 20

I did it in my head and then spent 5 mins wondering why it was so easy, all you had to do was take 12 from 14 then multiply by 10.

I think the people who requested this were 6th graders

This one looks pretty simple. Add the 14 and the 8 and then subtract 20. This will give you what is overlapped between 8 and 14, which is 2, and that's the width of the shaded region. Then you just multiply it by 10, the height, and you get the area of 20.

I thought the 8 arrow included the shaded area. And the 14 arrow included the shaded area. First get the width of non-shaded area: 20-8= 12 and 20-14= 6. For a total non-shaded width: 12+6=18. Now to get the width of shaded area: 20-18=2. Now area of shaded: 2x10=20.

I could do this intuitively just on a visual level but i appreciate seeing the algebraic approach to it, I need to be able to think in these terms more often. Cheers

my answer was:
14-8 = 6
8-6 = 2 = shaded area horizontally
10 * 2 = 20 square units which is the shaded area

I like to picture these questions where there are overlapping measurements as if they were planks. You saw the extra from one side so we can glue both sides together and have a little spare, in this case it's the rectangle's base. Add both overlapping values and get 22, so if you know the big rectangle's base is 20 you can tell the "extra" piece has to be 2.

That helped me solve without calculating anything else, and it helps visualizing a lot more stuff.

A little overly complicated. Overall length is 20, minus 14 for the longer sub section, equals 6 left in the unshaded part of the smaller rectangle. Overall length of the smaller rectangle is 8, minus 6 for the non-overlapped portion, leaves 2. 2*10 = 20 sq units. No algebra required. Just simple logic.

The obvious way is to just calculate the length where it overlaps, but I also liked the mathematical solution since that's how we're gonna be solving shit 90% of the time

Since rectangles overlap then area if each consist area of needed small. So 10*14+10*8-10*20= needed area

i thought of it kinda like coordinates
20-14 = 6
0+8=8
8-6 (the distance between the points)=2

its my first math problem i did before you started explaining

since the shaded area was where the 14 and 8 measurements overlaped I just took the remaining part that wasn't covered by the 14 distance and substracted it from the total so 20-14=6, that is the width of the 8 distance that DOESN'T overlap with the 14, so to know the width of the overlap just do 8-6=2 and you have your X then just 2x10 as normal for the area
