A hate crime is when someone is targeted specifically *because* of their race, religion, sex, sexual/gender identity, etc. There hasn't been a shred of information that has come out saying the shooter targeted the children and adults "because* of their religion. None.
The police said the school was the target because the shooter, being a former student there, knew the exact layout of the school.
