If you’ve listened to acoustic guitar riffs by famous bands like; Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac or the Eagles then you’ve definitely heard the sound that I’m going to cover here in this lesson. It is a chord tone and scale technique that gets used across hundreds of songs and the list of famous bands that play it are endless.

In this lesson, I will be showing you a method for taking the root chord along with the key’s 4th chord and from their chord tones create a path toward one of the most popular music theory tricks for establishing a truly fantastic sound.

To understand how this method works, we will look into using the key of “D” Major with its root “D” major chord along-side of its IV-chord of, “G” major.

We will study this method’s application in the way that it has been made most famous - which is to perform it on the acoustic guitar.
The sound itself is based off of notes from “D” Major’s key signature.

This key, uses its root chord of “D” Major and the key’s 4th chord of “G,” to represent a popular format. We can use this format to apply a simple theory trick that a lot of acoustic guitar music has integrated into literally countless songs.

How it works is the root chord and its companion 4th chord can have their chord tones combined to create the most perfect musical scale. But, there is a catch! We will leave out one of the notes, and replace it with another note.
