The History of Makeup | Time Travel Series With Scott Barnes: 2010s - The Decade of the Glow

Join Scott on another adventure back in time to explore the History of Makeup.
In this episode, we'll be taking a look at 2010-2019, the decade of “the Glow.”

The 2010s were all about serving face. Strong contour and bright highlights were crucial for structure, and smokey eyes and nude lips ruled with their sultry sex appeal. Everything was shimmer and shine, with red carpet looks that glowed from within.

This was the decade in which Scott Barnes truly took an authoritative role in the makeup industry. Through his work with hot celebrity clients like Jennifer Lopez, Scott empowered women and helped them claim their space in a competitive, highly visual world.

In 2012, Scott set the world on fire with contouring when he did a makeup look for pop culture queen Kim Kardashian. She asked to photograph his techniques for Instagram, and the post went viral. This rocketed Scott’s unique contouring techniques into the mainstream (you’ve probably tried them for yourself!).

Watch as Scott creates a gorgeously soft monochromatic makeup look with lots of glowy warmth. Stay tuned for a very J.Lo-esque photoshoot featuring iconic 2010s fashion.

Scott and Laken, I can not wait for this. I keep watching this series over and over again just because of the two of you and Scott’s mad makeup skills along with the fact he is using you who is beautiful before and after but most of all I just love the banter you both have when you are doing these segments‼️❤️. excited for tonight.

Scott, I've loved every single video from this Time Travel Series. So, to celebrate all your hard work, allow me to send some laughs and giggles your way: Dirty Harry's wife walks up to two beauty influencers, taps them on their shoulders, and says in a stern voice, "Go ahead! Make my face!"

Best one yet! I just want to say that I appreciate the camera shots in this series!!!! It is so cool and educational when Laken stops after each step that Scott does to show camera make up and the difference between the sides of her face. Thank you Scott for sharing transformational tips! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

I've literally just watched up the whole series, and as a life long makeup fan, I appreciate just how fantastic Scott Barnes is as a makeup artist.
However, the contour and highlight I actually learned off my OG iconic makeup artist Kevyn Aucoin. I remember finding his first makeup book (which I won't mention here in respect of Scott) back in 1998 when I was at college. And it blew my mind and changed my life. As someone with an damaged nose and face from a fall, I learned to understand just how much of a game changer it was. And the image of Kevyn's sister in the book with the contour and highlight painted on (reminds me of the way Kim K's picture looked that she posted to insta years later).

Scott is the only other makeup artist that I truly admire. For me, he has that same magic that Kevyn had with his hands. Seeing him blend seamlessly and make the skin look incredible is something I wish I could do, and it's something that Scott and Kevyn were amazing at.

RIP Kevyn. 2002. You never got to shine through the era of social media.
Scott Barnes is building upon that legacy and making his own ripples in the makeup industry, and I love seeing it. Scott is a true talent.

I love the shade thrown at Beauty gurus. Honestly I love it when makeup artists make videos about artistry and techniques, but when some random girl puts on pr makeup and calls herself a guru it’s just.. no.

Omg the amount of times this make up reminisced JLO is insane for me...
When the contour finished, JLO
When he applied the blush, JLO
Such a signature technique

That was absolutely brilliant— it’s one of those things where everything you were talking about with respect to contouring made such absolute sense, from applying the contour beneath foundation to using the curves of the bone structure to dictate where to place contour. I definitely fall under “makeup enthusiast, ” but one who uses a lot of professional techniques for applying makeup for competitive ballroom (whose makeup style I tend to refer to as “drag and editorial had a baby”). This entire series has been an absolute blast. Thank you so much for giving me so many great ideas and such great lessons on how to go about applying makeup, not just for ballroom, but also for everyday wear. And a big thank you to Laken for being such a mythical unicorn and taking on so many different personals.
