PLAN and RESEARCH a 2,000 word essay with me at university (how to write first-class essays)

It's essay deadline season and I just started planning and researching a 2,000 word essay, so I thought I'd bring you along. This is the technique I used last year to get firsts in all my essays, so it's tried and tested!! I hope it helps, as I know essay writing is a bit terrifying and stressful sometimes!!

1.choose questions
2.make mindmap bout the questions (sources and lecture notes)
3.research log (primary, secondary) keep track
4.research process-
uni library-search keywords
google scholar-keywords
check bibliography and references
5. identify core themes of ya research= paragraphs of the essay
6. sort them in your essay plan

So for the people who are preparing for essays or will be heading to university in the future and will need to write essays, I highly suggest getting a referencing software for your reference list/bibliography. I have used Mendeley and Endnote. They’re both amazing. Mendeley is free. Endnote you usually pay for but many universities might have it available for free. You put all of the bibliographical information into either of these softwares and both of them have plug-ins for Microsoft word where you can cite directly from what you have added into the software and it will build your reference list for you at the end in whatever style you need. It honestly saves a lot of time. Plus, most of these softwares allow you to put notes into a separation section for each entry and you can use that during the writing stage too.

This is a refreshingly novel approach. The referencing spreadsheet is an absolute banger of an idea, which I now view as a condensed form of an essay. Usually I bounce between the material and the draft I'm writing. The references are usually spread over 100 tabs in a web browser.

Here is my tips.I couldn’t afford something big for my project, so support suggested ordering plan with main points, which I could extend then. I did, and writer provided all info with links so I just had to add few sentences to each point. Love their website for fresh ideas!

I found this video in my second year of uni, and your research log was a game changer for me! Having this spreadsheet immediately improved my method and streamlined my workload, allowing me more time to find more interesting and relevant primary and secondary sources, and more time to write. Since graduating (with a first class, thank you Jack!) I still use this method when writing my own personal essays -- I'll say it, logging my sources is fun as hell, and sometimes its my main motivation in writing an essay.

Came back to this video having just finished my final year doing history (using MHRA referencing eugh) and can 100% confirm this method works - my lowest mark this year was 64 and my highest was 80...I used the grid method on ALL of this year's essays so can highly recommend trying it if you do humanities (especially history)!!
